Gear-cutting.-In a gear-grinding machine of the kind in which the rolling of the tooth fece of a blank a relatively to the flat surface of a grinding-disc e is produced by the interaction of a templet g with a stationary roller abutment h, the return movement is effected by means of a spring i mounted on a slide l whose movement is co-ordinated with that of the blank slide c in such a way that the length oi the spring only varies slightly during ihe rolling cycle. The blank spindle carries a wheel i preferably of twice the diameter of the blank and engaging a rack k on which the upper end of the spring bears. During the upward movement of the slide c, the slide l is arranged to move downwardly at the same rate and the rack k also moves downwardly, any slight relative movements between the parts k and l being accommodated by the spring. In a machine embodiment, Fig. 2, the blank slide is reciprocated by a crank and is connected to impart ec ual and opposite movement to the slide l by means of a lever n and the spring i acts on the parts k, l through a lever m.
