Abstract
247,710. Hamilton, C. J. Dec. 30, 1924. Mounting undercarriages.-In means for detaching wheels from side-car and like forks of the kind in which the wheel hub is carried by an inner hub supported by bearings on the non- rotatable axle, the inner hub with the axle and bearings are adapted to be withdrawn axially as a unit from the wheel hub. The wheel hub 42 is carried by the inner hub 24 which is supported on the axle 6 by ball bearings. The chain-wheel and brake member drives the wheel hub through pins 39 and the wheel hub is clamped in position by a nut 34 having a flange by means of which it may be locked, a pin 50 being provided for this purpose. The pin 50 is grooved on one side and this groove is engaged, when the pin is in position, by a spring-ring 55 which also engages a groove in the nut 34. One of the cones 23 of a ball race fits in a slot in the fork end 8. The opposite end of the axle 6 is carried in a flanged cup 15 mounted in a housing 13 adapted to be clamped by a bolt 7 within the jaws 20, 21 of the fork 1. Feathers on the inner hub 24 engage slots in the central member 36 of the chainwheel and brake member 37 to give a driving connection. To remove the wheel, the axle nut 29 is unscrewed, the pin 50 is detached, the nut 34 unscrewed, and the bolt 7 slackened. The inner hub 24, the axle. 6, and the flanged cap 15 may then be withdrawn axially as a whole sufficiently to permit removal of the wheel hub 42. Springs 45 engage grooves 46 to prevent entire removal of the inner hub and associated parts.
