Abstract
A packaging for food and food products, particularly but not exclusively for two different food products to be stored separately. The food packaging comprises a first or outer bowl 4 for a first substance and a separable insert tray 12 for a second substance, and being microwaveable. In this way, the insert tray may comprise a separate food or food product from the first bowl, which insert tray and food or food product can be separately heated and/or cooked prior to addition to the food or food product in the bowl. The tray has an upper or outer rim 14 which engages a lip 10 on the bowl. The packaging may include one seal across the top surface of the bowl; the seal may not be bonded to the tray.
Description
Food Packaging The present invention relates to a packaging for food and food products, particularly but not exclusively for two different food products to be stored separately.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a container for food and food products adapted to increase consumer ease of use, possibly heating, and pleasure in eating.
According to one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a food packaging comprising: (a) a first outer bowl for a first food or food product, and (b) a separable insert tray for receiving a second food or food product, the insert tray fitting within the first bowl, and being microwaveable.
In this way, the insert tray may comprise a separate food or food product from the first bowl, which insert tray and food or food product can be separately heated and/or cooked prior to addition to the food or food product in the bowl.
The insert tray preferably has an upper or outer rim. More preferably, the first bowl has an inner rim, and at least part of the outer rim of the insert tray has a shape, design, and/or size which is wholly or substantially concordant with a shape, design and/or size of at least part of the inner rim of the first bowl, preferably, at one end thereof, so as to nest in particular therewith or therewithin.
In one embodiment of the present invention, a part of the inner rim of the first bowl comprises a lip, more preferably a recessed ridge, able to support at least a part of the outer rim of the insert tray.
According to another embodiment, the top of the insert tray is located wholly or substantially in alignment, generally being co-planer, with the top of the first bowl.
The insert tray is preferably formed of a material that is microwaveable, and the food or food product therein is preferably also able to be warmed/heated by microwave radiation. In this way, the insert tray and food or food product therein can be separated from the first bowl, located in a microwave oven, and directly heated for an appropriate time period, prior to removal from the microwave oven, and addition of the food or food product in the insert tray with the food or food product in the first bowl.
The foods or food product in the first bowl and insert tray may be the same or different, and may be one or more from the group comprising: salad, vegetables, meat, meat products and mixtures thereof.
According to another embodiment of the present invention, the top of the insert tray is located wholly or substantially in alignment, generally being co-planer, with the top of the first bowl such that only one seal is required across the top surface of the first bowl to maintain the contents of the insert tray within the insert tray prior to opening of the seal, and so as to not allow accidental spillage of the contents of the insert tray into the first bowl prior to use. This provides reassurance both to the packager, provider and consumer that during transportation, purchase and prior to use (by the opening of the seal), the first food or food product remains separate from the second food or food product regardless of the movement and orientation of the food packaging.
In this way, there is minimum manufacturing processing required to seal the contents of both the first bowl and the insert tray, with the seal being sufficiently close to the top surface of the insert tray that a separate seal of the insert tray is not required for the advantages mentioned hereinbefore.
That is, the seal does not need to be bonded to the insert tray.
Thus, the present invention provides an easy to form packaging for two different food products, that can be packaged with a manufacturing process involving only one seal and sealing step.
The base of the first bowl may comprise an oval shape, and optionally be upstandingly concave so as to increase the position of the food or food product therein towards the top.
The packaging of the present invention may include one or more further insert trays, preferably having an outer rim, and optionally being co-planer with the outer rim of the first bowl, and also preferably being microwaveabe, and able to contain one or more food or food products also microwaveable.
In another view, the present invention relates to (a) a first or outer bowl for a first food or food product, and (b) a separable insert tray for a second food or food product, the insert tray being able to fit within the first bowl, and being microwaveable to provide a hot second food or food product mixable with the first food or food product in the first bowl.
An example of the present invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 a and lb are perspective and end views respectively of a food packaging according to one embodiment of the present invention; and Figure 2 is an exploded view of the packaging in Figure la.
Referring to the drawings, Figures la,b and 2 show a food packaging 2 comprising a first outer bowl 4. The first bowl 4 comprises a generally oval shaped inner rim 6, with depending walls therefrom to a base 8 having a smaller cross-sectional area, and generally being flat or otherwise concave.
Inside one half of the inner rim6 is shaped an upstanding ridge 10 formed integrally with the first bowl 4 during manufacture, as shown in Figure 2 Figures 1 and 2 also show an insert tray 12 comprising a generally oval-based semi-circular upper rim 14. The underneath of the upper rim 14 corresponds with or is otherwise concordant with the upstanding ridge 10 so as to allow the insert tray 12 to nest into the first bowl 4, and in particular to nest so as its outer rim 14 is co-planer with the outer rim of the first bowl 4 as shown in Figure lb. Although the inner tray 12 is able to nest with and be supported by the first bowl 4, it is separable therefrom as shown in Figure 2. Preferably, the insert tray 12 is separable from the first bowl 4 by wholly or substantially direct lifting of the insert tray 12 away from the first bowl 4. This not only provides full access into the contents of the first bowl 4 (not shown), but also allows the separate heating, in particular microwave heating, of the insert tray 12 and its contents (not shown).
One example of food or food products useable with the present invention is a salad within the first bowl 4, and a meat product or meat-based product in the insert tray 12. After the meat or meat product has been heated, it can be added to the salad and mixed therewith, so as to provide a warm salad in a packaging container ready to eat.
Figure lb shows the ability for the packaging 2 of the present invention to be sealed using one seal 16 only across the upper surfaces of the first bowl 4 and the insert tray 12. However, this seal 16 is only bonded to the upper surface of the first bowl 4. The seal 16 prevents dislocation of the food or food product in the insert tray 12 into the first bowl 4 prior to release of the seal 16, in particular during transportation of the food packaging after preparation and before sale and eating.
The present invention provides a neat and convenient packaging able to contain in particular two different food products, one of which can be removed and heated in an insert tray, prior to mixing with the food product in the first bowl.
Various modifications and variations to the described embodiment of the inventions will be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims. Although the invention has been described in connection with specific preferred embodiments, it should be understood that the invention as claimed should not be unduly limited to such specific embodiments.
