Abstract

209,699. Hickman, W. A. Jan. 10, 1923, [Convention date]. Rudders. - Vessels fitted with a semisubmerged propeller are provided with fixtures designed to counteract the unbalanced lateral thrust of the propeller. This end is achieved by means of a plate or plates 42, 43, Fig. 3, secured to and extending aft of the stern. The plates may be stiffened by connecting them at the top by an arch 30 which serves as a splash guard. The plates may also be connected beneath the level of the water. Alternatively, the propeller is enclosed in a hollow open-ended cylinder. The twin rudders 60, Fig. 7, located at each extremity of the stem on outwardly-inclined pivots are actuated by rack and pinion gear 56, 57. In another form, the counterbalancing plates take the form of flexible plates 62, Fig. 8, which are linked together and flexed by suitable mechanism to serve as rudders.
