Abstract

A transit and display container includes a tray 10 formed from a blank 14 and a separate lid 12. The tray comprises a base 18 and support walls 20 which can selectively form shelves extending towards each other and arranged to support articles. Articles can then be supported on the base and on the support walls in a double layer fashion. Once the articles on the shelves 20 have been removed, these can be folded upwardly about fold lines (50, Fig.4), to allow access to the articles supported on the base.

Description

CONTAINEp The present -"Jenton rela to containers formed from a flat
bl:K, methods of making such containers, fiat blanks cr makLn into containers, display trays and a method of r-i articles from a display tray.
: practice o transmt items in a Supermarket in a pack and to remove the lid of the packs and take prcdcts directly from a tray of the pack. However, each pack is only able to transmit a single layer of products stacked from the front to the back. Consequently, the use of packaging material is significan Further, considerable time is spent in removing an empty pack and replacing it with a new pack.
:t is an object of the present invention to attempt to cvercorne at least one of the above or other disadvantages.
J The present invention IS defined in the claims and
elsewhere in this specification
The present invention may be carried with practice in various ways but cne embodiment will now be described by ay of example and with reference to the accompanying orawings, in which: F gre is a perspective view of a tray 10; Ficre 2 is a perspective view of the tray 10 with a lid 2 scaoed therefrom; * 2 Figure 3 is a perspective view with the lid 10 on the base Ficre 4 is a view of a fiat blank 14 that is to be made ir the tray IC'; and Figure is a view of the flat blank 16 that is to be made into he lid 12.
s shown in Figures 1 and 4, the tray 10 includes a base is onto which products (not shown) can be stacked. The tray:0 aisc includes shelves 20 extending horizontally towards each other at a location approximately mid way up each side of the tray. iD
:n use, products to be transported and subsequently sold are loaded onto the base 18. Preferably the products extend across the complete width of the tray in an upright manner, from the front wall 22 to the back wall 24.
If desired the tray can be loaded with products that extend to a height of less than half the height of the base. ifl this instance, the shelves 20 may subsequently and optionally be folded to the position shown in Figure The shelves 20 may move to restrain movement of the roducts on the base 18. Alternatively, or additionally, the shelves 20 may serve to provide a support for further products, which may be the same as the products loaded on the base. The further products may extend across the nor lete width of the base in an upright manner from the front wall 22 to the back wall 24.
In this manner a simpl tray may transport a double layer of products to be sold without the products in the upper layer 000peratino with a shingling with the products in the liwer layer.
The lid 12 is located on the tray 10 after icading of the tray.
:o At the point of sale of the products the lid is removed and the products in the upper layer are removed first, from the front wall to the rear wall, after which the shelves 20 are folded to be upright with the products in the lower layer being removed from the front to the rear.
The assembly of the flat blank 14 into'the tray 10 will now be described with reference to Figure 4. All folds in Figure 4 are valley folds.
Side walls 30 are folded upwardly about side folds 32.
The front wall 22 is folded upwardly about a front fold 26 and rear wall 24 is folded upwardly about a fold 28.
Side connecting flaps 34 that now extend upwardly are folded about a fold 36 that is now vertical that connects them tc the front wall 22. In the flat blank there is a cut 38 between one flap 34 and side wall 30 and a narrow ap 40 between the cther flap and side wall 30. These 3 flaps 34 are then connected to the side walls in a well known manner such as by stapling and adhesive between the facing surfaces.
Eubsecuently now upwardly extendinc side conecting flaps 42 are ftidd about inner upwardly extendin fclds 44 that to the front wail. In the flat blank there is 3. c.t 4 between one flap 42 and side wall 30 and a narrow gap 45 betweer, the other flap 42 and side wall 30. The flaps 42 are then connected to the side walls 30 in any wel known manner such as by stapling and adhesion between one facino surfaces.
1C e tray is now ready fcr loading products onto the base.
After the base 18 has been loaded, the shelves 20 are fcded inwardly, towards each other, by folds 50. Further products are now loaded onto the shelves 20, above the initial products. Lateral movement of base products is 2.5 Prevented at the sides by the flaps 34 and 42, which extend to approximately twice the height of the side wails 30, arid at the back by the rear wail, which extend to approximately twice the height of the side walls 30 and at the front by the front wall 22 to which has a quarter height than the side wails 30.
The front wail 22 has a height that is less at the middle than towards the sides such that a section defined by a toc edge 52 is of less height than the side walls 30 whereby products in the lower layer are visible even when the too layer is loaded onto the shelves 20.
The rear wail 24 has a cut cut 54 of less height than the s:de wa.is such that products in both the upper layer and c.;er layer are visible.
f.ao 34 includes a window section 54 that enable tabs to he renoved along an arcuate line. These tabs may be remcved before the lid has been put over the tray to form the cack or after the lid has been removed.
16 tnat cc-;ers tne -.6 s snown in rre. - _:ods are va.ey fc_ds.
Tre:d bank 16 includes a top 58. A front waL. 60 is foded through 900.
The lid blank 16 includes a top 58. A front wall 60 is L.ed through 90 about a fold 62. A rear wall 64 is likewise moved about a fold 66. Side walls 68 are similarly folded about folds 70.
The front wall 60 and rear wall 68 of the lid are of marginally less extent than the height of the front wall 22 and rear wall 24 of the tray. The bottom surfaces of ne front and rear walls of the lid include cut outs that provide tabs 60A and 64A.
The tabs 60A and 64A are such that the main extent of the front and rear walls are on the outside of the tray with the tabs extending inwardly of the front and rear walls to hold the walls of the tray in place.
The side walls 70 of the lid extend outwardly of the side ccrect nQ flaps 34 and 42 and may be adhered thereto to cr-eot those side walls and flaps.
The tray and lid are both made from corrugated board which a planar sheet on one or both sides. The f extent of the conneczon is from right to shown by the arrow 72 in Figures 4 and 5.
