Abstract

The packaging system 1 comprises an outer shipping carton 2 having a base 3, a pair of opposed end walls 4, and a pair of opposed side walls 5 extending upwardly from the base to define a top which is closed by end flaps 6 and side flaps 7. The shipping carton 3 has a plurality of folded packaging carton blanks 10 mounted therein. The packaging carton blanks 10 are arranged in the outer shipping carton 2 in two layers 11, 12, one above the other. The layers 11, 12 of carton blanks 10 are separated by a first carton divider 20 which comprises a base panel 21 and a pair of side wing panels 22 which are hinged about fold lines 23 to form a generally U-shaped divider member 20 in which the wing panels 22 extend upwardly from the base panel 21 and along the end walls 4 of the shipping carton 2. A second or lower divider 20 separates the lower layer 11 from the shipping carton base and end walls 4. When the shipping carton 2 is opened at the point of use, the upper carton divider 20 is readily removed with the upper layer 12 of packaging carton blanks 10. The divider acts as a carrier which holds the packaging blanks 10 together and facilitates loading of the blanks 10 into the feed magazine of a machine which unfolds the blanks 10 and erects them ready to receive a product. Similarly, the lower divider is used to hold the second or lower layer 11 of packaging blanks 10 for ease of handling and loading into.

Description

"A PACKAGING SYSTEM"
Introduction
This invention relates to a packaging system for packaging a plurality of folded packaging carton blanks.
Packaging carton blanks which are to be used to hold products are formed and printed at a printing works and then loaded into an outer shipping carton for delivery to an end user. There is a risk of the folded carton blanks being damaged in transit or storage which results in a high level of rejects and difficulties for the end user in loading the carton blanks onto a packaging machine.
This invention is directed towards providing an improved packaging system which will address at least some of these problems.
Statements of Invention
According to the invention there is provided a packaging system comprising: a shipping carton having a closed bottom, a top, a pair of end walls, and a pair of side walls; a plurality of folded packaging carton blanks in the shipping carton, the packaging carton blanks being arranged in the shipping carton in at least two layers, one above the other; and a carton divider separating the layers, the carton divider comprising a U-shaped member having a base and a pair of side wings which extend upwardly from the base along opposed walls of the shipping carton.
In one embodiment the carton divider comprises fold lines about which the side wings are hinged.
The carton divider is preferably of boxboard material.
In one embodiment the carton divider and the shipping carton comprise coding means to associate the carton divider with the shipping carton. The carton divider preferably comprises an embossment providing the coding means.
In a preferred aspect the packaging system comprises a second carton divider having a base which extends along the bottom of the shipping carton and a pair of side wings which extend upwardly along opposed end walls of the shipping carton.
In one case the or each carton divider comprises a holder for holding the plurality of added packaging carton blanks when the carton divider and associated carton blanks are removed from the shipping carton.

The invention will be more clearly understood from the following description thereof given by way of example only, in which:-Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a packaging system according to the invention; Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view of the packaging system of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a plan view of a blank used in forming a carton divider used in the packaging system; Fig. 4 is a side view of the carton divider blank of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the formed carton divider; Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the carton divider of Fig. 5 with a plurality of folded packaging blanks in place; Fig. 7 is a plan view of one folded packaging blank; and Fig. 8 is a side view of the packaging blank of Fig. 7.
Detailed Description
Referring to the drawings there is illustrated a packaging system 1 according to the invention.
The packaging system 1 comprises an outer shipping carton 2 having a base 3, a pair of opposed end walls 4, and a pair of opposed side walls 5 extending upwardly from the base to define a top which is closed by end flaps 6 and side flaps 7.
The shipping carton 3 has a plurality of folded packaging carton blanks 10 mounted therein. The packaging carton blanks 10 are arranged in the outer shipping carton 2 in two layers 11, 12, one above the other. The layers 11, 12 of carton blanks 10 are separated by a first carton divider 20.
The carton divider 20 comprises a base panel 21 and a pair of side wing panels 22 which are hinged about fold lines 23 to form a generally U-shaped divider member in which the wing panels 22 extend upwardly from the base panel 21 and along the end walls 4 of the shipping carton 2.
The carton divider 20 is preferably of a folding boxboard material, 255g/m2, 0.425mm thickness, and bending stiffness (ISO 2493 Taber 15°) of 9.lmNm (CD) and 16.9 mNm (MD).
In this case the upper layer 12 of the carton blanks are separated from the lower layer 11 by a first divider 20. There is also a second divider which is identical to the first divider and like parts are assigned the same reference numerals. The second or lower divider separates the lower layer 11 from the shipping carton base and end walls.
In use, the shipping carton is erected and the first or lower divider which is formed from the flat sheet by folding the end wings upwardly is placed on the base 3 of the shipping carton 2 with the side wing panels 22 extending upwardly from the base panel 21 along the end walls of the shipping carton. A plurality of packaging carton blanks are then inserted into the lower divider in the shipping carton 2 to form the first layer 11.
The second or upper divider is then formed and inserted into the shipping carton with the base panel 21 resting on the top of the lower layer 11 of the packaging blanks 10 and the side wings 22 extending upwardly along the end walls 4 of the shipping carton. The second layer 12 of packaging carton blanks 10 are loaded onto the divider 20.
On completion, the top flaps 6, 7 of the shipping carton are folded over and sealed, for example by a suitable adhesive tape.
When the shipping carton 2 is opened at the point of use, the upper carton divider is readily removed with the upper layer 12 of packaging carton blanks 10. The divider acts as a carrier which holds the packaging blanks 10 together and facilitates loading of the blanks 10 into the feed magazine of a machine which unfolds the blanks 10 and erects them ready to receive a product.
Similarly, the lower divider is used to hold the second or lower layer 11 of packaging blanks 10 for ease of handling and loading into the loading magazine of a carton erector.
The carton dividers 20 are a relatively close fit in the shipping carton 2 to provide added strength and resistance against bowing of the packaging blanks 10 in storage and/or shipping.
The dividers have a coding means to associate the dividers with the shipping carton in which they are to be used. The coding means may comprise an embossment on the divider containing a code which is associated with the shipping carton.
For example, the embossment may comprise a code such as VIR which is associated with a particular shipping carton (which may for example have the same VIR code marked or embossed thereon). This ensures that the correct fitting divider is used with the appropriate shipping carton.
The invention is not limited to the embodiments hereinbefore described, which may be varied in detail.

Claims (8)

  1. Claims 1. A packaging system comprising:-a shipping carton having a closed bottom, a top, a pair of end walls, and a pair of side walls; a plurality of folded packaging carton blanks in the shipping carton, the packaging carton blanks being arranged in the shipping carton in at least two layers, one above the other; and a carton divider separating the layers, the carton divider comprising a U-shaped member having a base and a pair of side wings which extend upwardly from the base along opposed walls of the shipping carton.
  2. 2. A packaging system as claimed in claim 1 wherein the carton divider comprises fold lines about which the side wings are hinged.
  3. 3. A packaging system as claimed in claim 2 wherein the carton divider is of boxboard material.
  4. 4. A packaging system as claimed in any of claims 1 to 3 wherein the carton divider and the shipping carton comprises coding means to associate the carton divider with the shipping carton.
  5. 5. A packaging system as claimed in claim 4 wherein the carton divider comprises an embossment providing the coding means.
  6. 6. A packaging system as claimed in any of claims 1 to 5 comprising a second carton divider having a base which extends along the bottom of the shipping carton and a pair of side wings which extend upwardly along opposed end walls of the shipping carton.
  7. 7. A packaging system as claimed in any of claims 1 to 6 wherein the or each carton divider comprises a holder for holding the plurality of folded packaging carton blanks when the carton divider and associated carton blanks are removed from the shipping carton.
  8. 8. A packaging system substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
