Coking processes.-In the distillation of coal or lignite, at the end of the heating process the atmosphere present in the retort or oven is displaced by a current of nitrogen, air, or combustion products, so that the hydrogen and methane ordinarily retained in the coke may be liberated, due to the fact that their partial pressures are reduced. The gases employed may be superheated, and the mixture of gases obtained may be subjected to partial liquefaction or another separation process for the extraction of the hydrogen and nitrogen for use in the synthetic production of ammonia.
