Abstract

243,414. Rushen, P. C., (Koppers Co.). July 30, 1924. C o k e ovens. - A method of coking coal comprises heating externally a charge having the lower part thinner than the upper part, and, when the thinner part is practically completely coked, introducing steam into this part. The coking operation in the lower part of the retort or oven is completed before that in the upper part and the steaming takes place in the early part of the coking process. The heating walls 11 of the coking chambers 12 are thicker towards the bottom and the tapered chambers are provided with heating flues 17 enlarged towards the bottom. Supporting walls 13 and 22 include regenerators 18 leading by pairs of ducts 23 to heating flues 17. A vertical partition 19 separates the regenerators 18 into two sections and each regenerator may be divided by a partition 109 into two compartments. The regenerators are grouped into pairs such as R, L, the gas flow in each pair being in the same direction, cross-over flues 26 communicating with adjacent heating flues 17 and the corresponding regenerators. Coke oven gas is supplied through channels 29 and ducts 31 to the heating flues 17. Steam is introduced and heated in a channel 35 leading by channels 34 and ports 37 to the bottom of the coking chambers 12. The distillates are withdrawn through outlets 16. Specification 171,117 is referred to.
