Abstract

242,853. Naden, J. H., and Girling, A. H. G. March 10, 1925. Band; blocks acting on drums. - In braking- mechanism comprising brake elements which are permitted a limited rotary movement when engaged with the brake drum, and in which the brake elements are adapted to be engaged by relatively fixed abutments which force them against the drum as they are carried round by the latter, the brake elements comprise portions A<3>, A<4> hinged together at A<5> and supported on channel-shaped operating-members F, F<1> pivoted at F<2>. Slots A<6> in the parts A<3> are engaged by rollers A<7> carried by the side flanges A<9> of the members F, F<1>, and cam surfaces F<6> on the parts A<4> are engaged by rollers F<4> carried by the flanges A<9>. The parts A<3> are engaged with the drum by the rollers A<7>, and their consequent movement with it effects the engagement of the parts A<4> by the co-operation of the members F<4>, F<6>. Springs F<7> are provided to hold the parts A<4> clear of the drum when the brake is released. The brake is contained and may be applied to existing brake c.rums without modification of any of the parts. In a modification. shown in Fig. 2, the parts L, L<1> are pivoted on short links L<2> and the psrts L are expended by a pair of pivoted arms M engaging rollers N on them, whilst the parts L<1> carry rollers N<3> engaging fixed cam surfaces N<2>.
