Abstract

A joining system includes first and second components (2, 10) to be joined. A portion of the first component (2) engages a portion of the second component (10). A wedge member (4) is rotatably attached to one of the components (2) so that upon rotation, a portion of the wedge member (4) can be moved into engagement with both of the first and second components (2, 10) to fix them to each other.

Description

QUICK ASSEMBLY / DISASSEMBLY SYSTEM
DESCRIPTION
The invention relates to a joining system which, after manufacture, can be assembled / disassembled very quickly without the aid of tools. Many other manufacturers' furniture must be assembled by screwing etc to complete construction which many people find is very involved, time consuming and often somewhat complicated.
The invention originally related to quality furniture of all types, freestanding and fitted. I wanted to alleviate the problems often incurred with, for example, moving house. A quickly assembly/disassembly system facilitates easier transportation of various items and can help avoid excessive removal costs (de, avoiding the need for a large vehicle).
However, the system does not just apply to household furniture. There are many other applications in most portable building systems. Possible applications include: 1. Portakabins, sheds, tents, trestles, tables, exhibition buildings and accessories, stage sets.
2. Quick assembly buildings for disaster areas, summerhouses, conservatories, etc. portable trailers, caravans.
3. Scaffolding, crowd barriers, spectator stands, pontoon bridges.
Items made incorporating the quick joining system can be transported much more easily and in greater volumes - a large vehicle would not be required. No tools or technical ability is required for assembling items incorporating this system.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 Illustrates the basic joint used in this case on a wardrobe. 1 shows the male precise joint in solid wood tongued and grooved into board material 2. 3 shows the precise female section in solid wood tongued and grooved into board material, when these two joints are interlocked movement is restricted left to right and downwards direction. 4 shows a rotating metal tapered plate attached to 1 & 2 by means of a dowel hole which when rotated into slot 5 on 3 holds 1 and 3 together. Thus restricting upwards movement. 10 is a basic rebate which must be precise, restricting upwards/downwards movement, left to right movement in the case of the lower joint being restricted by 4, the mid 10 joint is shown retained by 4a fixed to 2 which is similar to 4 but also has a coat hook so when plate 4a is rotated into slot 5 on 10 it holds 10 and 2 together restricting all movement and also serving as a coat hook.
Figure 2 This is more descriptive and shows the joints in more detail. 6 and 7 are solid wood tongued and grooved onto board material 2, with hinge pinhole 8 to facilitate door movement. 9 is a basic plinth tongued and grooved onto 7.
-
figure 3 Illustrates a complete assembly, 11 being the doors inset with hinge pin which enters hole 8 on top and bottom boards 2, 12 constitutes the wardrobe back panel.
13 is a groove into which 12 is inserted holding it in place and restricting movement in any direction. 14 is solid wood tongued and grooved onto 2 to give a solid wood frontage.
Figure 4 Illustrates metal plates 4 and 4a in more detail. 1 being an M4 threaded bolt which when screwed through metal plate 3 or 4 into 2 (a threaded nylon ribbed dowel) holds the assembly together and allows easy rotation of the same, plates 4 and 4a are pressed or hammered into the appropriate component by means of a predrilled dowel hole. 3 which has a central hole, tapered to a wedge on one side, and raised to a finger grip on the other, or 4 which has a central hole tapered to a wedge on one side and a coat hook on the other allowing dual purpose of coat hook and easy rotation.

Claims (1)

  1. QUICK ASSEMBLY/DISASSEMBLY JOINING SYSTEM
A quick assembly/disassembly joining system for a structure comprising of at least one first precisely machined rebated joint male on one component, female on the adjoining component which restricts movement of the adjoined component in a left to right or upwards/downwards motion, with inwards/outwards motion being prevented in the case of a free standing structure by a rotating metal plate, and at least one second precisely machined profile joint, male on one component, female on the adjoining component, the shape of which restricts movement when adjoined in a inward/outward and downward motion, upward motion being prevented in the case of a freestanding structure by a rotating metal plate, such that when all said joints are assembled the structure so formed will stand firm and have stability, each rotating metal plate which is common to both forms, comprising of a machined metal plate with a central pivot hole, through which a threaded bolt connects it to a threaded nylon ribbed dowel, which is then pressed into a machined dowel hole on one component, the plate has on one side of the pivot hole a machined tapered narrow wedge shape and on the other a raised finger grip thus allowing easy rotation of the tapered wedge into a precisely machined slot in the adjoining component, thus restricting movement in any direction of the adjoined structure, the number of rebated and profiled forms required depend on the structure being manufactured.
