Abstract

A lifting hook 1 attached to a lifeboat on a ship or offshore installation is prevented from being released accidentally by a pin 11. The pin 11 extends through holes in the cheek plates 03 of the hook 1 to prevent rotation of the hook 1 even if the hook release mechanism is activated. Removal of the pin 11, which can be retro fitted to existing installations, allows the hook 1 to be operated normally.

Description

DESCRIPTION
A device to prevent the accidental release of a lifeboat on a ship or offshore installations, fixed or mobile. This device is to ensure that the lifeboats lifting hooks are properly closed and cannot accidentally open when the boat is being lifted on board the ship or offshore installation. The device will also allow safe maintenance to the lifeboat hooks without the risk of accidental release. The device will also ensure the lifeboat hooks do not open while the boat is being lowered to the water during drills or emergency evacuation. The device consists of a steel locking pin known as the SURELOCK PIN, which will be inserted through a suitable size hole drilled through the cheek plates and hooks preventing the hook from opening under any load condition. The steel locking pin known as the SURELOCK PIN will prevent the hooks from being released even if the on-load release system is operated.
The steel locking pin known as the SURELOCK PIN will be removed when the lifeboat is hilly waterborne allowing the hooks lo be released and -he lifeboat to manoeuvre away from the vessel or installation.
DRAWINGS
Figure 1 This figure shows the present system fitted to most ships and oil rig lifeboats and is known as the on-load release hook. Items 03 and 09 are the fore and aft lifting hooks These hooks are the attachment of the lifeboat to the lifting appliance on the ship or offshore installation. This system allows the hooks to be opened by over-riding the internal locking mechanism item 05 by lifting indicator lever item 06 and by pushing release lever item 07 the release cables items 04 and 07, turn cam items 02 and 10 allowing both hooks items 01 and 08 to pivot thus allowing both hooks items 01 and 08 to open.
Figure 2 This figure shows the device Items 11 and 12 fitted preventing the hooks from being opened The device will not allow the hooks items 01 and 08 to pivot thus preventing the hooks from being released. The device items 11 and 12 will prevent the hooks items 01 and 08 from opening even if the internal locking mechanism 05 is over-
ridden by lifting the indictor lever item 06 and pushing the release lever 07.
Figure 3 This figure shows the present system fitted to most ships and offshore installations.
Items 03 and 09 represent the forward and aft hook mounted in most lifeboats installed on ships and offshore installations. These are operated by a release lever as shown in figure l items 05, 06 and 07. Once the release lever has been operated even if the craft is manned and suspended on the ship or offshore installation the hooks, items 01 and 08 will open and the lifeboat will fail to the sea. This procedure of releasing the hooks while still suspended from the vessel is known as "onload release". To accidentally or deliberately perform the procedure when the boat is out of the water will all most certainly result in personal injury or even death.
Figure 4 This figure shows the device items 11 and 12 installed through the lifting hook items 03 and 09 and through the release hooks items 01 and 08. When the device items 11 and 12 are installed the release hook items 01 & 08 cannot rotate and therefore cannot open. If the on-load release option is performed by over-riding the internal locking mechanism figures, item 05 by lifting indicator lever item 06 and by pushing release lever item 07 the release cables items 04 and 07 turn cam items 02 and 10 the release hook items 01 and 08 will not pivot thus the lifeboat will not be released.
