Abstract

A lamp in the form of a hand grenade has high intensity light emitting diodes at its surface and contains a battery, radio receiver and antenna to allow remote activation and control. The grenade may be coupled via a magnetic switch to triggering devices such as a trip wire or geophone and the LEDs may emit visible and / or infra red radiation. The type of radiation and the period for which the lamp operates may be adjusted over the radio frequency link. A spike at the base of the grenade may be used to secure it to the ground, or the grenade may be thrown once a push button activator has been depressed to initiate delayed activation. The device is designed for use by the police or military to illuminate or disorientate targets.

Description

kIGHT GRENADE The invention relates to a robust light for field use by
Military, Police and other similar
services in the most rugged climatic environments.
Such devices are well known in the roles mentioned in the above paragraph but suffer from the disadvantages that they are not reusable, do not perform reliably in extreme climatic environments and cannot be controlled by the operator.
This invention also has the appearance of a conventional explosive had grenade which is considered to be of importance in many military operations.
The object of this invention is therefore to provide a method of lighting, which permits the operator to remotely control different types of lighting, the time periods for each and reuse the device after a specific operation.
The invention also has the appearance of an in service explosive hand grenade, whilst in itself is a non-lethal device.
In addition to its ability to be hand thrown as per a conventional explosive hand grenade, the invention can be illuminated by external triggering mechanisms such as trip wires and sensors such as seismic and passive infra-red devices.
The invention would be preferably fabricated from robust plastics materials, but could also be manufactured from metal.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will be described below with particular reference to the accompanying drawings in which; FIG 1 indicates an overall view of the whole grenade FIG 2 - indicates the internal component parts of the grenade.
As shown in Fig 1, the light grenade comprises a case having the appearance of a conventional explosive grenade, the surface of which contains a number of high intensity Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs).
These LEDs operate in both white (visible) light and Infra-red (invisible) wave- lengths.
Operators are therefore able to use the device either with or without Night Vision Devices (NVDs). A recessed push button switch permits the grenade to be "armed" prior to either being thrown by the operator or activated by external remote switches.
Fig 2 shows that an RF (radio) receiver is incorporated inside the grenade. This allows the LEDs to be remotely illuminated and extinguished by the operator, and permits the operator to select either visible or "invisible" illumination.
Activation is achieved by an RF (radio) transmitter carried by the operator.
Activation by external sensors can be achieved via the connectors on the bottom of the grenade shown in Fig 1.
A ground spike can be fitted to the grenade as shown in Fig. I to permit the invention to be placed upright in the ground for extended periods.
The grenade is powered by an internal battery, as shown in Fig 2.

Claims (4)

1) A hand held illumination device having the outward appearance of a conventional explosive hand grenade, possessing a number of light emitting diodes (LEDs) on its external surface, a built in battery and a built in coded RF radio receiver to permit the illumination to be remotely switched on and off and the period of the illumination to be varied.
2) A light grenade as claimed in claim 1 where a magnetic switch is fitted to permit the illumination to be automatically enabled by means of a trip wire connected to the magnetic switch 3) A light grenade as claimed in claim 1 where various types of light emitting diodes (LEDs) are fitted to permit illumination in both the visible and infra-red (JR) wave bands.
3) A light grenade as claimed in claim 1 where a spike is fitted to the bottom of the device to permit it to be mounted in the ground, and the illumination to be automatically enabled by means of a seismic geophone mounted in the spike.
4) A light grenade as claimed in claim 4 where the illumination is enabled automatically by externally connected sensors.
