Abstract

Aqueous suspensions of one or more aminoanthraquinones or their derivatives are employed to dye vegetable cellulose or liguo-cellulose fibres such as straw, tagel, coir, jute, hemp, esparto, Illegible data ramie, and flax, but excepting paper pulp as claimed in Specification 233,382 and cotton. An example shows the dyeing of straw in a bath containing soda-ash and a paste of 2-methyl-1-aminoanthraquinone the bath being brought to the boil. An orange shade results. A further example shows the dyeing of straw to a red-violet shade in a boiling bath of aqueous acetic acid and 1 : 4-diaminoanthraquinone. 1-Chlor-2-amino-anthraquinone gives yellow shades, 1-methyl-aminoanthraquinone red shades, and the product obtained by nitrating 1 : 5-diphthalimidoanthraquinone, hydrolyzing and treating with alkali sulphide (see Specification 231,206) yields blue shades. The method may be applied to mixed fabrics containing the cellulose fibres.
