Pivoted-bar fastenings particularly for hinged sides and doors of railway &c. wagons, such as are described in Specification 2436/14, are provided with means to prevent the slotted end of the bolt A from jamming between the pin B, on which the bolt can slide and pivot, and the back plate D. Fig. 1 shows the bolt in fastened position with an enlargement a<1> thereon engaged in a socket E. To release, bolt A is raised vertically to the extent allowed by the slot a to disengage enlargement a<1> from the socket, and can then be swung outwardly on the pivot pin B to the hanging position, Fig. 3. The slotted end of the bolt and the co-operating parts are so shaped that the bolt can receive longitudinal movement on pin B only when in the vertical position shown in Fig. 1, the bolt in other positions being restricted to pivoted movement on the pin which is retained at the outer end of slot a. A projection G engaging the supporting lugs C' prevents endlong movement of the bar in the position shown in Fig. 3, and as the bar is swung upwards, disengaging projection G from the lugs, the end of the bar engages a curved recess F between the lugs to maintain restriction to a pivotal movement. In a modification, Fig. 8, two projections G<1> are provided on opposite sides of bolt A. The projections may reach to the edge of the slot a as shown, or be narrower, and the recess between the lugs is accordingly flat as in Fig. 8, or curved. In another form the projections are disposed on the other side of the slot, and the lugs C' have recesses to receive them when the bolt is in the fastened position. In a further form.
