Abstract
A sleeve (1) for a food tray is formed by folding a single sheet of material without gluing and comprises a generally rectangular base (2), a pair of generally rectangular upright side walls (3) extending upwardly form opposite side edges of the base and a pair of cover walls (4, 5) extending inwardly from the upper edges of the side walls and overlapping one another to form a cover spaced above the base. The cover walls are formed with a slot (8) and a tongue (9) for releasably connecting them together in their overlapping configuration such that the sleeve can be unfolded for use as a place mat.
Description
A SLEEVE FOR A FOOD TRAY
Prepared meals and other food is often sold in food trays such as aluminium foil trays with card lids. Meals are also sold on a tray which can be used as a plate. Such a tray will also be provided with a removable lid or cover.
The invention relates to a sleeve for a food tray and in particular to a sleeve which is folded from a single sheet of material without gluing and which can be unfolded for use as a place mat.
Accordingly the invention provides a sleeve for a food tray folded from a single sheet of material without gluing to form a generally rectangular sleeve comprising: a generally rectangular base; a pair of generally rectangular upright side walls extending upwardly form opposite side edges of the base; and a cover extending between the side walls and spaced above the base; wherein the sleeve is formed with means for releasably holding it in its folded configuration such that it can be unfolded for use as a place mat.
An embodiment of the invention is described below with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a view of a sleeve blank in an unfolded configuration ; and
Figure 2 is a view of the sleeve in its folded configuration.
The sleeve 1 comprises a generally rectangular base 2, a pair of generally rectangular side walls 3 and a pair of cover walls 4,5. The side walls extend upwardly
from opposite side edges of the base and are connected thereto through folds 6. The cover walls 4, 5 extend inwardly from the upper edges of the side walls 3 and are connected thereto through folds 7. The cover walls 4,5 overlap one another to form a cover spaced above the base.
The cover walls 4,5 are formed with means for releasably connecting them together in their overlapping configuration to hold the sleeve in its folded configuration.
The connecting means are provided by a slot 8 formed in cover wall 4 and a co-operating tongue 9 formed in cover wall 5.
Other means for holding the sleeve in its folded configuration are envisaged. For example, the cover may be formed as a single panel extending from the upper edge of one of the side walls and having means for releasably connecting it to the other side wall.
When folded as shown in Figure 2, the sleeve is suitable for surrounding and protecting a food tray. When un-folded, the sleeve can lie flat for use as a place mat and, for this purpose, at least that surface of the sheet of material which is the inner surface when the sleeve is formed, may be liquid impermeable.
In one embodiment the sheet of material comprises a laminate formed by an inner card layer with upper and lower liquid impermeable layers applied thereto.
The inner surface of the sleeve, which forms the upper surface of the place mat, can also be printed to bear advertising or other material.
Claims (5)
1. A sleeve for a food tray folded from a single sheet of material without gluing to form a generally rectangular sleeve comprising: a generally rectangular base; a pair of generally rectangular upright side walls extending upwardly form opposite side edges of the base; and a cover extending between the side walls and spaced above the base; wherein the sleeve is formed with means for releasably holding it in its folded configuration such that it can be unfolded for use as a place mat.
2. A sleeve for a food tray according to claim 1, wherein the cover is formed by a pair of cover walls extending inwardly from the upper edges of the side walls and overlapping one another.
3. A sleeve for a food tray according to claim 2, wherein the means for releasably holding the sleeve in its folded configuration is provided by a slot formed in one of the cover walls and a tongue formed on the other cover wall.
4. A sleeve for a food tray according to any preceding claim, wherein that surface of the sheet of material which is the inner surface when the sleeve is formed, is liquid impermeable.
5. A sleeve for a food tray substantially as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawings.
