Abstract

237,083. Logan, H. T. July 5, 1924. Mechanical toys.-A mechanism for producing a sinuous motion, particularly intended for use as a toy, comprises a rod-like cam and a flexible covering which is so disposed as to permit relative movement between it and the cam. The device is shown applied to a. toy representing a cat, the rod-like cam A being connected to the driving- spindle of a clockwork mechanism B. A spiral of wire C surrounds the cam and constitutes a reinforcement of the skin covering D. One end of the wire C is rigidly attached to the casing of the mechanism B so that the cam can move within and relatively to the skin D. The head of the cat is hinged and is connected to the stopping-device of the clockwork. Thus when the head is stroked, the mechanism B is freed and the rotation of the cam imparts a sinuous movement to the tail. Instead of representing the tail of a cat, the cam and its covering may represent a snake which can be operated by holding one part of the exterior covering and moving an eccentric portion X of the cam. In some cases, the spiral D may be replaced by washers threaded on the cam with or without a covering.
