Abstract

A hinged flood barrier, for a doorway (figure 2) or airbrick (figure 3), has a plate-like element 4, 5 hinged on one side to a frame fitted around the aperture to be protected. In the case of a doorway, the hinge is demountable by means of pin and socket formations. The non-hinged side of the plate-like element and the corresponding part of the frame have tubular formations which, when the barrier is in use, are linked together by means of a rod 6.

Description

FLOODWATER RESTRAINING SYSTEM Introduction A device to prevent ingress of floodwater through a door by means of an additional partial door fixed to the doorframe or adjacent brick/stone work, to provide a watertight barrier.
The device consists of a frame made of a plate which is permanently fixed by means of a watertight seal to the outside frame of the door, or adjacent wall, and horizontally along the doorstep. The bottom plate is bent to form a lip. To this frame are fixed part hinges which allow the door to swing and are made up to the full hinge by positioning the removable door. To the opposite side of the frame is fixed a lug for handle/clip attachment.
O csr) The, door is fashioned to allow for a door weatherboard with the part hinges on one side and a clip/handle on the other side. A rubber gasket is attached to the mating edges of the door which, when squeezed by the action of locking the compressing clip/handle will provide the watertight seal.
The auxiliary door will be removed completely in periods where no flood danger is envisaged.
When located in the hinge attachment the auxiliary door is completely openable to allow doorway access and even when clipped in place and providing the watertight barrier the original door can still be utilised by stepping over the auxiliary door.
The complimentary airbrick cover is a device consisting of a rectangular frame again made of plate with lugs on either side which is permanently fixed around the airbrick. The cover consists of a plate with a gasket fixed to the edge all round, positioned with part hinges and locked with a clip. When locked the clip pulls the plate against the frame, compressing the rubber gasket to a watertight seal.
A FLOODWATER RESTRAINING SYSTEM Description This invention relates to the prevention of the ingress of floodwater into property.
The usual system in vogue to prevent ingress of floodwater is sandbags which are of limited effectiveness, unsightly, difficult to store and use and restrict use of doorways.
This invention comprises a door and backing plate which provides a watertight seal for the lower door opening and a complimentary airbrick cover.
Figure 1 shows in perspective the backing plate in position around the door opening and the auxiliary door prior to attachment.
Figure 2 shows a frontal view of the auxiliary door in position.
Figure 3 shows the airbrick sealing system prior to closure.
The system comprises for the door opening. a backing plate, auxiliary door with watertight seal between, positioned by hinge secured by bolt or spring clip. The airbrick opening is made watertight by backing plate hinged cover rubber seal and locking spin or spring slip.
This system works by having the backing plates permanently screwed into position making a watertight seal with mastic. In times of flood danger the auxiliary door and airbrick cover are placed in position on the hinges, shut and locked into position to provide a completely watertight barrier.
To provide ease of access, the door can be opened when the auxiliary door is locked in position, and the auxiliary door can be opened whilst still attached as flood water recedes.

Claims (1)

  1. CLAIMS A method of reducing risk of flood damage to property which comprises of unobtrusive permanent fixed frames to door and airbrick openings to which are fixed, in times of flood danger, (kp auxiliary partial door and cover plates.
The devices are easily attached when needed, allow access to property when fixed and
restraining floodwaters. and can be removed and stored at other times to maintain aesthetics.
Backing plate for auxiliary door can be fixed to door frame or adjacent brick/stone work.
The design of the auxiliary door allows for the watertight seal to be effected under the weatherboard where the space is minimal.
The door is positioned easily and accurately by the hinge system.
The watertight seal between the auxiliary door or airbrick cover and backing plate is effected by the compression of the rubber seal by the locking of the sealing clip.
Amendments to the claims have been filed as follows C).
CLAIMS 1). A closure assembly for preventing the ingress of floodwater comprising of a permanently fixed plate, to which is attached in times of flood danger, a shield with rubber seal to effect a watertight barrier.
2). A closure device as claimed in claim 1 where the closure is an auxiliary door shielding the lower portion of an external door.
3). The closure device as claimed in claim 2 where the auxiliary door is attached by means of drop hinges.
4). The closure device as claimed in claim 2 is easily attached when needed, allows access to property when fixed and can be removed and stored at other times to maintain aesthetics.
5). The closure device as claimed in claim 2 where the permanently fixed plate can be attached to the door frame or adjacent brick/stone work by means of screws and mastic to effect a watertight seal.
6). The closure device as claimed in claim 2 where the auxuiliary door allows for the watertight seal to be effected under the weather board where space is minimal.
7). The closure device as claimed in claim 1 where the closure is a cover shielding an entire airbrick.
8). The closure devices as claimed in claim 2 and 7 are positioned easily and accurately by means of the drop hinge system.
9). The closure devices as claimed in claims 2 and 7 where the watertight seal is effected by the compression of the rubber seal between the fixed plate and shield, by locking of the pin or sealing clip.
