Cut-out arrangements of the Merz-Price type employing protective' relays 16 connected in star between equipotential points 14 of the normallybalanced pilot-wire system 15 have each of the relays short-circuited by fuses 18 which constitute a delta-connection around the relays. By these means the sensitive relays are rendered insensitive to out of balance currents in the protected lines not due to a fault therein, whereas in the case of an earth fault an out of balance current circulates through the particular relay corresponding to the faulty line and through the neutral point 17, which is connected by the lead 13 to the neutral points of the current transformers 11, 11<1>, unaffected by the shunt fuses. In the case of an interphase fault a relatively large out-of-balance current will circulate through one or more of the fuses which will blow, thereby opening the short-circuit between two of the relays and permitting one or both of them to operate and isolate the section.
