Abstract
236,305. Niblett, H. April 12, 1924. Universal joints.-A single pair of links a<2>, b<2> are connected to shaft members a', b<1> by pivotal' joints a<3>, b<3> and to one another by a ball-andsocket joint c, the ball member of which may be integral with its link. The ball-and-socket joint may be replaced by any universal connection, such as a combination of plane and cylindrical surfaces forming a modified Hook's joint, or one link may have freedom to rotate on its axis. In order to secure balance, the links may be connected approximately at their centres of gravity to the members a', b<1>. It is stated that,. as the joint c always rotates in a plane which bisects the angle between the shaft axes and is perpendicular to the plane containing them, the coupling transmits uniform rotation between the shafts a, b. The shafts may, however, have a relative lateral displacement.
