Abstract

The process of the parent Specification, according to which crude anthracene is heated with caustic alkali, without distilling off the water formed, in presence of an indifferent solvent boiling at about 300 DEG C., is modified by adding to the reaction mixture lime or other alkaline-earth oxide, and when such addition is made a solvent having a boiling point of 220-260 DEG C. may be used. Purified anthracene and carbazole are separated from the reaction mixture as described in the parent Specification.
