Abstract

Crude anthracene is freed from carbazole by heating with caustic alkali in presence of an indifferent solvent, such as a paraffin, having a boiling point of 260-320 DEG C., the reaction being carried out without distilling off the water formed. The alkali carbazole is separated and converted into carbazole in known manner, and the anthracene is crystallized from the solution and washed with benzene. The reaction is preferably carried out at a temperature just below the boiling point of the solvent.
