Abstract
In a method of mounting a door (2), preferably a vehicle access door, on a door frame (4), a first part (14) of at least one live hinge (10, 12) is secured to the frame and the door is mounted onto a second part (16) of the hinge. The live hinge is preferably formed of a plastics material and may be a single-piece member or a laminated structure in which separately formed layers (18 and 20) are bonded together. The method may comprise a further step of mounting the door using a conventional metal hinge (8) having separately formed first and second parts connected by a hinge pin.
Description
2360547 P186gb.1wp METHOD OF MOUNTING A DOOR The present invention relates
to a method of mounting a door, and in particular to a method of mounting a vehicle door and the like. Such doors may include vehicle access doors, for allowing ingress and egress of persons into, or out of, a passenger compartment of the vehicle, or other vehicle doors such as those used for realisably enclosing the boot or bonnet compartment of a vehicle.
The conventional method of mounting a vehicle door, such as a car door, to a vehicle body requires two metal hinges to be attached to a front edge of a door frame. A striker pin is provided at a rear edge of the door frame for engagement with a latch of the car door. After the latch is attached to the car door, the door is mounted onto the vehicle by securing the front edge of the door to the hinges. Thereafter, a number of alignment operations take place to ensure that the door sits correctly within the frame with the door able to close properly, and so that the latch engages correctly with the striker pin.
Each hinge usually comprises at least three separately-formed metal members, namely first and second hinge parts for respectively attaching the hinge to the door frame and to the door, and a hinge pin threaded between the two hinge parts and defining a hinge axis about which the first and second hinge parts are able to move, relative to each other.
The present invention is concerned with a modified method of assembling a door onto a vehicle.
According to the present invention, there is provided a method of mounting a door on a door frame, the method comprising the steps of mounting at least one live hinge on the door frame using a first hinge part of the or each live hinge; and mounting a door onto a second hinge part of the or each live hinge, the or each second hinge part being W movable relative to the respective first hinge part about a respective hinge axis.
2 It will be understood that a live hinge is a hinge structure having first and second hinge parts, separated by a flexible portion which defines the hinge axis about which the first and second hinge parts move. The first and second hinge parts, and the flexible portion are generally formed integrally. In order to increase the overall strength of the hinges, 5 two or more integrally-formed live hinge layers may be laminated together.
Whilst the method of the present invention is applicable to the mounting of all vehicle door types, including the mounting of boot and bonnet covers, it is particularly applicable to the mounting of vehicle access doors, which allow the ingress and egress of persons into, or out of, a passenger compartment of a vehicle.
The invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows, in perspective, a car door, prior to attachment to a car door frame; and Figure 2 shows, in perspective, a live hinge. Referring to the drawings, Figure 1, shows a car door 2 and a car door frame 4. The 20 door frame 4 has a front edge 6, onto which are bolted three hinges 8, 10 and 12. The lower two hinges 10 and 12 are live hinges, and the uppermost hinge 8 is a conventional multi-part metal hinge. The three hinges 8, 10 and 12 are initially bolted to the front edge 6 of the door frame 4 by means of screwing bolts through holes (not shown) provided in first hinge parts of each hinge, Second hinge parts of each hinge 25 are shown projecting away from the front edge of the door frame 4. Figure 2 shows one of the live hinges 10 of Figure 1. The live hinge 10 comprises a first part 14 and a second part 16, separated by a flexible portion 24 which defines the axis of the hinge. The live hinge 10 is formed from two laminated live hinge layers 18 30 and 20. Each layer 18, 20 is integrally formed from a plastics material, having a predetermined thickness. The flexible portion 24 is formed by reducing the thickness of the plastics material over the area defining that portion. The flexible portion 24 3 thereby enables the first hinge part 14 and the second hinge part 16 to move relative to each other about the axis defined by the flexible portion. Holes 22 are provided on both the first and second parts of the live hinge 10. As mentioned above, the hinges 8, 10 and 12 are attached to the door frame 4 by bolting the first hinge parts to the front edge 6 of the door frame 4. In order to mount the door 2 to the door frame 4, the second hinge parts of the three hinges 8, 10 and 12 are bolted to the front edge of the door 2, using the holes provided on the second hinge parts.
It will be appreciated that, as an alternative to mounting the hinges 8, 10 and 12 to the 10 door frame 4 prior to mounting the door 2 to the hinges, the hinges may be mounted to the door prior to the step of mounting the hinges to the frame.
By mounting a conventional metal hinge 8 at the uppermost part of the front edge of the frame 6, the lower, plastics material, live hinges 10 and 12 have an extended life due to the flexible portions being placed under compression, rather than under tension.
4 Clahns 1 A method of mounting a door on a door frame, the method comprising the steps of mounting at least one live hinge on the door frame by using a first hinge part of the or each live hinge; and mounting a door onto a second hinge part of the or each live hinge, the or each second hinge part being movable relative to the respective first hinge part about a respective hinge axis.
2. A method according to claim 1, wherein the door is a vehicle access door, for allowing ingress or egress of persons into, or out of, a passenger compartment of a vehicle.
n J. A method according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the or each live hinge is mounted to the door frame prior to the door being mounted on that live hinge.
4. A method according to any preceding claim, wherein the live hinge is formed of a plastics material.
5. A method according to any preceding claim, further comprising the step of mounting the door on the door frame using a conventional metal hinge, the metal hinge having separately formed first and second hinge parts pivotally connected together by a hinge pin.
6. A method according to claim 5, wherein the metal hinge is mounted on the door frame at a position above that at which the or each live hinge is mounted.
7. A method according to any preceding claim, wherein the or each live hinge is provided as a single-piece, integrally-formed member.
A method according to any one of claims 1 to 6, wherein the or each live hinge is provided as a laminated structure, comprising at least two separately-formed layers.
5 9. A method according to claim 8 wherein the at least two separately formed layers are adhered together.
10. A method substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
