Description

2355303 Ventilation Apparatus This invention relates to ventilation
apparatus, in particular to a louvered ventilator and parts thereof, a 5 method of assembling a louvered ventilator, and a kit.
It is know for ventilators to be constructed at a manufacturing plant and transported ready assembled to be mounted in or on a wall during or after construction of the wall. It is often necessary to provide packing around the ventilator or to enlarge the aperture in the wall in which the ventilator is to be fitted, due to slight variations in the dimensions of the assembled ventilator and/or wall. Pre-assembled ventilators are also relatively bulky and need to be transported in large goods vehicles to the construction site or building, which increases costs considerably, especially if a large number of ventilators are required, for instance in a large office building or factory block.
Furthermore in many known ventilators, the ventilator comprises a support structure onto which louvre blades are clipped to form the complete assembly. Sometimes the clips are not totally secure and therefore the louvre blades may slip from the ventilation units. This is especially likely if the ventilation apparatus is secured to an outside wall of a building where gusts of wind may cause the louvre blades to unclip from the support frame.
Many ventilation units are also relatively time-consuming to manufacture, since they require drilling and/or riveting of a relatively large number of parts together.
2 It is therefore an object of the present invention to address problems associated with ventilation units.
According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a support for at least one louvre blade, comprising an upright and at least one louvre securement member for fixedly securing said blade to the support, wherein said at least one louvre securement member is integrally formed with at least a part of said support.
Preferably, said upright comprises a back member and first and second side members. The side members are preferably arranged perpendicularly to the back member, such that the upright takes the form of a channel member.
is Preferably said at least one louvre securement member is integrally formed with its respective side member as an extension thereof.
Suitably the louvre support may be formed from a substantially planar sheet, which may be manufactured to a desired shaped and formed into the channel-shaped upright at the place of manufacture. Preferably the material is a metal, more preferably aluminium. Alternatively the material may be a plastics material.
The louvre securement member(s) may comprise substantially planar arms extending from first and second side members and co-planar therewith. Each louvre securement member preferably has an upper edge which, in use, has a louvre blade secured thereto.
3 The channel member may be arranged substantially vertically and a plurality of said louvre securement members may be arranged such that their upper edges are downwardly inclined to the vertical, on each of the two 5 sides of the back member of the upright.
Suitably the or each louvre securement members of the first side member are positioned opposite to and parallel to the or each louvre securement members of the second side member. The distance between a louvre securement member of the first side member and a louvre securement member of the second side member may be equal to or less than the width of a louvre blade to be secured.
The louvre securement members preferably include at least one engagement means arranged to cooperate with at least one engagement means of a louvre blade.
The louvre securement members and/or louvre blade may be so shaped that when said engagement means of the louvre securement member engage said engagement means of the louvre blade, at least one of the louvre securement member or louvre blade is laterally tensioned to ensure a rigid fit.
Said lateral tension may be primarily or substantially the only means needed of ensuring a rigid fit between said louvre blade and said louvre securement member.
There may be engagement means arranged at or near the proximal edge of said louvre securement member, and at or near the distal edge of said louvre securement member. The engagement means at or near the proximal edge of the 4 louvre securement member are preferably arranged on or adjacent the upper surface thereof, and the engagement means at or near the distal edge are preferably arranged on or adjacent a lower surface thereof.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of manufacturing a support for at least one louvre blade, the method comprising the steps of:
obtaining from a flat sheet of material a predetermined flat sheet profile defining at least one region which will form the upright of the support, and at least one region which will form a louvre securement member of the support; and Folding said flat sheet profile such that said louvre securement member extends perpendicularly to the upright.
According to a third aspect of the invention there is provided a louvre blade with upper and lower surfaces, said blade having first engagement means for engaging with a distal engagement means provided on a louvre support, second engagement means for engaging with a proximal engagement means provided on the louvre support, wherein at least one of said first and second engagement means of the louvre blade is in-turned towards the lower surface of the blade.
Preferably, said first engagement means is in-turned towards the lower surface of the blade, and more preferably both first and second engagement means are in- turned towards the lower surface of the blade and/or each other.
Suitably the first and second engagement means of the louvre blade are disposed on and both in-turned towards the lower surface thereof, such that engagement of said first and second in-turned engagement means with their respective proximal and distal engagement means provided on the louvre support, more particularly on the louvre securement member of the support, serves to rigidly secure the blade in the support, the first engagement means being restrained from disengaging from its respective distal engagement means on the support by means of the engagement of the second engagement means with its respective proximal engagement means on the support.
Preferably, said engagement means of said louvre blade and/or louvre securement member are so dimensioned that when said engagement means of said louvre blade engage in interlocking manner with said engagement means of said louvre securement member, at least one of said louvre blade or louvre securement member is laterally tensioned to ensure a rigid fit.
Suitably there are second and first engagement means on said louvre blade at an upper end thereof and at a lower end thereof respectively, and complimentary proximal and distal engagement means on said louvre securement member at an upper surface thereof and a lower surface thereof respectively, such that when securing the blade to the support one firstly interconnects said lower (first) engagement means of said louvre blade with said distal engagement means of said louvre securement member, said 6 interconnection being restrained against disengagement by subsequent interconnection of the upper (second) engagement means of said louvre blade with said proximal engagement means of said louvre securement member.
According to a fourth aspect of the present invention there is provided an assembly comprising:- a support for at least one louvre blade having at least one pair of louvre securement members disposed thereon; at least one blade secured to said louvre securement members, and extending therebetween; said louvre securement members having proximal and distal engagement means and said blade having second and first engagement means; wherein said first engagement means is retained in engagement with said distal engagement means by said second engagement means being engaged with said proximal engagement means.
According to a fifth aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of assembling a unit comprising a louvre support with at least one pair of louvre securement members and at least one louvre blade, the method comprising fixedly securing a louvre blade to said pair of louvre securement members that are laterally spaced apart from each other, said louvre securement members having proximal and distal engagement means for engaging with co-operating second and first engagement means respectively provided on said blade, comprising the steps 7 of engaging the f irst engagement means with said distal engagement means and thereafter engaging the second engagement means with said proximal engagement means by pressing down on the louvre blade whereby the blade is 5 securely f ixed to the support.
It will be readily apparent that the upper surface of the louvre blade may take any desired shape, provided that the lower surface of the blade has the necessary first and second engagement means.
According to a sixth aspect there is provided a method of removing a louvre blade attached to a pair of louvre securement members of a louvre support by means of cooperating engagement means, comprising using a tool having a handle at one end thereof and at the other end thereof means for engaging an edge of said blade protruding from its respective louvre securement member, engaging said tool with said blade edge and subsequently pivoting the tool thus engaged to release said blade edge from engagement with its respective securement member.
Any feature of any aspect of any invention or embodiment described herein may be combined with any feature of any aspect of any other invention or embodiment described herein.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:- 8 Figure 1 shows a plan view of a f lat sheet prof ile of louvre support, prior to being folded to f orm. the louvre support of the present invention; Figure 2 shows a side view of the louvre support f rame of Figure 1, after folding; Figure 3 shows a close-up side view of proximal engagement means of the louvre securement member; Figure 4 shows a close-up side view of distal engagement means of the louvre securement member; Figure 5 shows a side profile of a preferred embodiment of 15 the louvre blade; Figure 6A shows a side prof ile of the louvre blade of Figure 5 with its first engagement means partially interlocked with the distal engagement means of the louvre securement member; Figure 6B shows the side profile of Figure 6A wherein both first and second engagement means of the louvre blade are fully interlocked with the distal and proximal engagement 25 means of the louvre securement member; Figure 7 shows a front view of the preferred embodiment of Figure 1 in which a plurality of louvre blades are locked in position on parallel pairs of louvre securement member; Figure 8A shows a side prof ile of the louvre support of Figure 1 with a louvre blade attached, and a tool f or removing the blade from the support; 9 Figure 8B shows the side profile of Figure BA, with the tool approaching the edge of the blade protruding from the louvre securement member; and Figure 8C shows the side prof ile of Figure 8A, and the tool engaged with the blade and being pivoted in the direction of the arrow to disengage the blade f rom. the securement member.
Referring to Figure 1, one embodiment of a louvre assembly in accordance with the present invention comprises a louvre support 10 cut to a predetermined planar configuration from a single sheet of material. This consists of portions which will, when the sheet is folded into a generally "U" shaped channel form, form the back 12 and first and second side members 14, 16 respectively. The first and second side members 14, 16 include integral louvre securement members of which two together make up a pair and are labelled 18, 19. The flat sheet is designed such that it can be folded along dotted lines 11, 13 to form the channel structure referred to above, with back member 12 being flanked by arms formed from side members 14, 16, with their integral louvre securement members 18,19 as shown in Figure 2.
When folded, louvre securement members 18, 19 of side members 14, 16 lie opposite to and parallel with each other, in order to accommodate a louvre blade. Each louvre securement member includes an upper surface 20 which is downwardly inclined to the vertical. In use, a louvre blade is arranged to lie across a parallel pair of inclined surfaces 20 of louvre securement members such as 18, 19. It will be appreciated that a louvre blade will be mounted on each pair of inclined surfaces 20 available on the louvre support 10.
Each louvre securement member 18, 19 is provided with a 5 recess 22 which forms a proximal engagement means of the louvre securement member.
Referring now to Figure 3, recess 22 is essentially a square shaped recess rotated through 45 degrees, such that lo it comprises backwardly sloping surface 24 and surface 26 substantially at right angles thereto which together define an proximal engagement means in the form of an abutment for engaging engagement means of a louvre blade.
The underside of each louvre securement member 18, 19 comprises a substantially horizontal proximal surface 28 and a downwardly inclined surface 30 which terminates in a hook like protrusion comprising vertical flange 36 and horizontal flange 34 surrounding recess 32. Recess 32 and flanges 34, 36 together define a distal engagement means of the louvre securement member, as illustrated in Figure 4.
Each louvre blade 37, which is preferably an extruded 25 aluminium blade, consists of a substantially planar portion 38 which in use is arranged to abut the downwardly inclined surfaces 20 of louvre securement members 18, 19. In order to fix the louvre blades to the louvre securement members, each louvre blade is provided with first 45 and second 39 engagement means arranged to interlock with the distal and proximal engagement means respectively of the louvre securement member.
11 The lower engagement means 45 comprises an upper vertical protrusion 48, a lower horizontal protrusion 52 with an upturned outer edge forming a hook 52a, and a smaller horizontal protrusion 50 midway between the other two 5 protrusions.
In order to secure each louvre blade to a pair of parallel louvre securement members 18 and 19, it is necessary to first engage the first engagement means 45 of the louvre blade to the distal engagement means 32 of the louvre securement members. Hook 52a is positioned to interlock with recess 32 and the protrusions 48, 50 to approach the outer surfaces of flanges 34 and 36 as shown in Figure 6A.
Pressure exerted on the planar portion 38 in the direction of arrow A causes protrusions 48 and 50 to abut the outer surfaces of flanges 34, 36 of the louvre securement members 18, 19, which fixedly interlocks the first engagement means 45 of the louvre blade with the distal engagement means of the louvre securement, member. At the same time the second engagement means 39 of the louvre blade will press against the backwardly sloping surface 25 of the securement member.
As even more pressure is exerted on planar surface 36, rebated flange 44 will be forced along surface 25 until it reaches proximal recess 22 of the louvre securement member, at which point rebated flange 44 interlocks with recess 22 of the louvre securement member with flange 44 held against surface 24 of recess 22 and planar surface 38 is pressed flush against the planar sloping surface 20 of the louvre securement members, as illustrated in Figure 6B.
12 The engagement means are so dimensioned that they are interlocked under stress and are therefore very secure, with no need for riveting, bolting or clipping of the blades to the securement members. As the blades are so securely fixed to the securement members, it is very difficult to remove them when it is required to do so, and therefore a special tool is provided for this purpose.
Referring now to Figures 8A through 8C, there is also provided in accordance with the present invention a removal method including the use of a tool 60 for engagement with the louvre blade, the tool comprising a handle 62 at one end thereof and at the other end a deep recess 64 formed between protrusions 66 and 68. In use, the tool is inserted around an edge of louvre blade 37 protruding from the louvre securement member 18 such that protrusion 66 is located beneath the second engagement means 39 of the blade, and the other protrusion 68 is located adjacent the outer surface 42 of the blade. In this position, pivoting the tool in the direction shown by the arrow B in Figure 8B forces the flange 44 of the blade out of recess 22 of the securement member, so that the blade may be removed.
Although the louvre blade and louvre support assembly of the invention is primarily intended for use as a functional ventilation unit, it may also be utilised to provide a non-functional 'fagade'.
