Abstract

Ethyl chloride is produced by combining ethylene with hydrogen chloride under pressure in the presence of an inert solvent, particularly ethyl chloride itself. Ethylene-containing gases may be employed and aluminium, magnesium or zinc chloride or a double compound of aluminium or ferric chloride with ethylene should be present as catalyst. According to the example, equal parts of ethylene and hydrogen chloride are pumped at a temperature of -15 DEG C. into an autoclave containing ethyl chloride and aluminium chloride to maintain a pressure of 60 atmospheres; when the container is sufficiently full, some of the ethyl chloride is boiled off at 20 DEG C. and the operation is repeated with the remaining portion. The process may also be made continuous. Specification 229,298 is referred to.
