Abstract

Chlorethenoid compounds, i.e. compounds containing the group CH2 = C(Cl)-, typified by a -chlorostyrene, a -chloracylic esters, vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride, are polymerized by subjecting them, in the substantial absence of water, to the action of heat in the presence of a peroxide catalyst in the liquid phase at a temperature not exceeding 60 DEG C., and in the presence of a compound containing the group <FORM:0572767/IV/1> in an amount, from 0.1-25 per cent by weight, at least sufficient to react with all the hydrogen chloride contained in and evolved during heating by the chlorethenoid compound or its polymer. Specified compounds are ethylene oxide, 1.2-propylene oxide, isobutylene oxide, cyclohexene oxide and the oxide obtained by treatment of a -naphthaquinone with sodium hypochlorite. Polymerization may be carried out in the presence of diluents, e.g. methanol or butane. In examples: (1) vinyl chloride is polymerized in the presence of dicrotonyl peroxide and ethylene oxide, under pressure, at 40 DEG C.; (3) vinylidene chloride, diluted with heptane, is polymerized at 45 DEG C. in the presence of crotonyl peroxide and 1.2-propylene oxide.
