Abstract
A system to provide drivers with a warning of the proximity of an object behind a vehicle when reversing. Sensors at the rear of the vehicle detect an object and a radio frequency transmitter transmits a signal representative of the distance of the object from the vehicle to a radio frequency receiver. The receiver generates a visual and/audible indication to the driver of the proximity of the object to the vehicle. The visual indication may be provided by a series of lights which are illuminated progressively to indicate a reduction in the distance between the object and the vehicle. The transmitter may be detachable for use with a trailer towed by the vehicle.
Description
ELECTRONIC REVERSING AID
WITH RF TRANSMITTER AND RECEIVER
When reversing, the visibility in many vehicles is restricted by narrow windows, rear facing seats and rear mounted spare wheels. Judging distances between the rear of your vehicle and other objects is also difficult, especially with bumpers and light clusters being incorporated into the vehicle's body work. A simple misjudgement, even at walking speed, can break rear lights, crack bumpers or damage another vehicle's headlights.
Connect a trailer to the rear of your vehicle and the problem is even greater.
With'Auto Park'installed, reversing with or without a trailer need no longer be a problem.
'Auto Park'. Vehicle only.
When reverse gear is selected,'Auto Park'will automatically switch on and monitor the distance to objects within a 1 metre range of the rear of your vehicle. The RF transmitter of the system will activate the sensors mounted on the rear bumper which will then detect any objects. Once detected, the transmitter will transmit a signal to the receiver which is located in the front of the vehicle. The driver is warned by an intermittent'beep'from a small electronic sounder mounted inside the receiver, with a secondary visual warning using LEDs, also mounted within the receiver. The closer the object gets, the number of LEDs illuminated increases and the speed of the'beep'gets faster. When the'beep'becomes a continuous tone and all the LEDs are illuminated, the rear of the vehicle is not more than 40 cm away from the object that has been detected.
'Auto Park'. Vehicle with trailer.
As'Auto Park'uses the latest in RF (radio frequency) technology, it means the system is transferable from car to trailer. With a second set of sensors installed onto the trailer, simply remove the transmitter of the system from the boot of the vehicle and clip it into place on the trailer. The system will now send a signal to the receiver mounted inside the vehicle warning of objects detected at the rear of the trailer.
Installation.
With only 2 wires to connect,'Auto Park'can be easily installed without drilling any holes and running cables to other components of the system.
The RF transmitter is located in the boot on a slide plate which allows it to be removed easily. The receiver with built in LEDs and sounder is located at the front of the vehicle. The 2 sensors are mounted onto the rear of the vehicle and plugged into the sockets on the transmitter. Connect the red wire from the transmitter slide plate to the reverse light wire of the vehicle and the black wire to the chassis. Connect the receiver to the cigarette lighter socket. Alternatively, connect the red wire to an ignition 12 volt positive and the black wire to the chassis. The system is now ready to test.
For trailer applications the system requires the installation of a second set of sensors and transmitter slide plate on the trailer. These are installed in the same way to the rear of the trailer as to the rear of the vehicle.
'Auto Park'is supplied with step by step installation instructions and all the parts required to install the system for a vehicle only application. (Where the system is to be fitted onto a trailer a second sensor kit will be required).
It should take the average DIY driver no longer than 45 minutes to complete the installation.

Claims (13)
- CLAIMS 1. A system for detecting an object while reversing a vehicle and providing an indication to the driver of the proximity of the object comprising sensor means for detecting an object in the path of a reversing vehicle, radio frequency transmitter means for transmitting a signal representative of the distance of the object from the vehicle, and radio frequency receiver means for receiving the signal from the transmitter means and generating a visual and/or audible indication to the driver of the proximity of the object relative to the vehicle.
- 2. A system according to claim 1 wherein a visual indication is provided by a plurality of lights which are progressively illuminated to indicate a reduction in the distance between the object and the vehicle.
- 3. A system according to claim 1 or claim 2 wherein an audible indication is provided by intermittent beeps which become progressively faster to indicate a reduction in the distance between the object and the vehicle.
- 4. A system according to claim 2 in which all the lights are illuminated at a predetermined distance between the object and the vehicle.
- 5. A system according to claim 3 in which the beep becomes a continuous tone at a predetermined distance between the object and the vehicle.
- 6. A system according to any preceding claim in which the transmitter is detachable for changing the mounted position.
- 7. A system according to claim 6 in which the transmitter is mountable on a vehicle or a trailer towed by the vehicle.
- 8. A system according to any preceding claim in which the receiver is mountable on the front of the vehicle.
- 9. A system according to any preceding claim arranged to switch on and monitor the distance to objects when reverse gear is selected.
- 10. A system according to any preceding claim arranged to indicate objects within a 1 metre range of the rear of the vehicle.
- 11. A system according to any preceding claim wherein the transmitter is connected to the light circuit.
- 12. A system according to any preceding claim wherein the receiver is connectable to a cigarette lighter socket.
- 13. A system substantially as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawings.
