Abstract
A parking aid whereby the driver of a vehicle is aware of the distance between his vehicle and a stationary object. The parking aid emits an electromagnetic signal and receives a reflected signal and displays the distance between the vehicle and the stationary object. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Parking aid
This invention relates to a parking aid for vehicles.
It is an object of the present invention to provide means whereby the driver of a vehicle may be made aware of the distance between the rear of his vehicle and a stationary object such as another parked vehicle.
According to the present invention there is provided a parking aid for vehicles comprising means for generating an electromagnetic signal, a transducer for emitting and receiving said electromagnetic signal, a control circuit for processing said receiving signal, and display means for indicating the distance between said transducer and some other reflecting surface.
Preferably, said control circuit includes a microprocessor.
Preferably also, said transducer is mounted on a vehicle.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 shows, in block diagram form, one embodiment of a parking aid made in accordance with the present invention; and
Fig. 2 illustrates the parking aid of Fig. 1 applied to a vehicle.
Referring to Fig. 1 a parking aid comprises an oscillator 10 for producing a signal of suitable frequency and strength such that when passed to transducer 11 an electromagnetic signal is
propagated over a distance of about 2 to 3 feet.
The transducer 11 receives reflected signals
from adjacent objects and passes the reflected
signals to a receiver 12.
The oscillator 10 and receiver 12 are connected to an electronic solid state control circuit 14 which computes the distance between the transducer 11 and the reflective surface 100. This processed information is displayed on an array of lamps 1 5 suitable positioned on the rear parcel shelf of the vehicle. The number of the lamps which are illuminated indicate to the driver the distance between the rear fender of the vehicle and a.wall or other vehicle close to the rear fender.
Modifications or improvements may be incorporated without departing from the scope of the invention, for example, a similar unit may be located at the front of the vehicle.
1. A parking aid for vehicles comprising means for generating an electromagnetic signal, a transducer for emitting and receiving said electromagnetic signal, a control circuit for processing said received signal, and display means for indicating the distance between said transducer and some other reflecting surface.
2. A parking aid as claimed in Claim 1, wherein said control circuit includes a microprocessor.
3. A parking aid as claimed in either preceding claim, wherein said transducer is mounted on a vehicle.
4. A parking aid for vehicles substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.

Claims (4)
1. A parking aid for vehicles comprising means for generating an electromagnetic signal, a transducer for emitting and receiving said electromagnetic signal, a control circuit for processing said received signal, and display means for indicating the distance between said transducer and some other reflecting surface.
2. A parking aid as claimed in Claim 1, wherein said control circuit includes a microprocessor.
3. A parking aid as claimed in either preceding claim, wherein said transducer is mounted on a vehicle.
4. A parking aid for vehicles substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
