Abstract

A tarpaulin cover comprising a woven fabric (1) laminated with a coating film and having integrally woven transverse reinforcing strips (2) is described. At the ends of the reinforcing strips are provided tie-down loops (3) on side edges of the cover. The fabric, the coating film, the transverse reinforcing strips and the tie-down loops are all made of polypropylene, thereby aiding recycling of the cover, without the need to separate out component parts made of different materials. By using only polypropylene, a good strength/weight ratio is also obtained.

Description

A COVER The present invention relates to covers and concerns a tarpaulin cover made of woven polyalkene fabric and coated with a plastic film. The cover has integrally woven transverse reinforcing strips, to which loops have been attached for tying the cover to a transport platform.
A cover as presented above has been described, for example, in Fl patent publication 81051. There have also been corresponding covers on the market. The known covers are made of a plurality of materials. For example, the warp threads of the fabric and the weft threads of the reinforcing strips can be made of multi-filament polypropylene yam and the other weft threads of polyethylene yarn. In addition, the weave may be coated with a plastic film. The use of different materials makes recycling of the cover more difficult, among other things.
Now a tarpaulin cover as described in claim 1 has been invented.
Preferred embodiments of the invention are described in the other claims.
The tarpaulin comprises a woven fabric, which has transverse reinforcing strips, at the ends of which there are tie-down loops on side edges of the cover. A coating film has been laminated onto the fabric. The fabric, the coating film, the reinforcing strips and the tie-down loops are all made of polypropylene. Recycling of a cover made only of polypropylene is easier than recycling of a cover made of various plastics.
In the following, some embodiments of the invention are described in more detail by way of example. In the diagrammatic pictures accompanying the description: -Figure 1 shows an embodiment of the tarpaulin in its entirety, and -Figure 2 shows the sewing of a tie-down loop on the side edge of the cover of Fig. 1 to a reinforcing strip thereof, according to the applicable German industrial standard.
The cover as presented in the figures is made of woven polypropylene fabric 1, which has a longitudinal warp and a transverse weft. In the cross direction, crossing the cover at regular intervals, there are reinforcing transverse strips 2, each of which has at both ends thereof a tie-down loop 3 attached to an edge of the cover. There are also reinforcing longitudinal strips 4 in the longitudinal direction of the cover, near the long edges of the cover. The cover is secured to a transport platform at the ends of the reinforcing strips, which can withstand sufficiently high securing forces. As the rest of the cover is made of thinner material than the reinforcing strips, some material is saved and a lighter cover is obtained. The size of the cover is 3,400 x 12,900 mm, for example.
To obtain waterproofing, the fabric 1 has been covered on one side with a polypropylene film. To obtain as complete waterproofing as possible, lamination is performed twice.
Around the edge of the cover 1 there has been sewn an edge reinforcement 5, which is made of a polypropylene band (width approximately 50 mm, for example).
When both the entire woven fabric and the coating film are of the same material, the best possible adhesion of the film to the fabric is obtained. In addition, the cover can easily be recycled. The cover is also more durable, as the strength and stretch of both materials correspond. By using only polypropylene as a material a good strength/weight ratio is also obtained.
The warp threads of the fabric can be of multi-filament polypropylene yarn (for example approximately 1,100-1,350 dtex, stretch approximately 1623%, approximately 80 yarns/10 cm). In the reinforcing longitudinal strip 4, the warp threads are more densely packed, for example, there are twice as many of them.
All the weft threads of the fabric may also be made of multi-filament yam, in which case there are more of them at the reinforcing transverse strip 2. Alternatively, multi-filament yarn may be used only in the reinforcing transverse strip and a polypropylene band in other places.
A coating film is usually laminated onto one side of the fabric only.
Each tie-down loop 3 is made of a polypropylene band (width approximately 100 mm) by folding and sewing the band to a side edge of the cover, on the inside thereof, at one of the transverse strips 2. On the inside of the cover, an edge reinforcement 5 has first been sewn to the edge, on top of which edge reinforcement a tie-down loop has been sewn with thread 6 in the way represented in Figure 2. The way of sewing shown ensures sufficient strength. This way of attaching the tie-down loop is advantageous as regards manufacturing technique.
Corresponding tie-down loops 7 are also provided at the ends of the cover at the longitudinal strips.
The thread 6 used to sew the tie-down loops 3 and 7 and the edge reinforcement 5 is preferably also made of polypropylene to aid recycling.
