Abstract

A safety knife comprises a sprung U-shaped frame with a housing mounted on a first one of the two free arms. A blade attached to the housing has an edge adjacent the second free arm. With the second free arm placed on a surface to be cut, pressure from a user on the housing forces the blade down to project beyond the second arm to cut into the surface. The amount of projection is adjustable by means of a threaded wheel which moves the blade relative to the housing.

Description

HAND HELD SAFETY CUTTING DEVICE WITH AJUSTABLE DEPTH CONTROL 1/ This invention relates to a Hand Held Cutting Device Particularly but not Exclusively for the use of cutting Paper, cardboard, Laminated composites, Wood Veneers and other Materials such as plastics and Foams, which has the facility to adjust the cutting edge Depth accurately, and when not in use prevents personal injury protecting the cutting edge by automatic means.
2/ Hand Held Knifes in the majority of cases are difficult to control for detail cutting where detailed cutting involves precise lines and depth requirement, also the cutting edge needs to be protected to prevent personal injury and damage to work piece when not actually in work, This design addresses these aforementioned points.
3/ This Application describes a Hand Held cutting device having the following characteristics, The device is operated by pressing down against an upwards force to allow the cutting edge to extend below a base plate, The depth of the cutting edge is controlled by an easily accessible dual action thumb wheel mounted on the top face of the device, This thumb wheel not only controls the depth of the cutting edge but acts as a pivotal point to control the downward pressure and direction of travel. by releasing the pressure on the thumb wheel the base plate returns to a position below the cutting edge by its own means, the base plate is designed to prevent the cutting edge being accessed by accidental means.
4/ This devise has four main components. See drawing attatched, Figures identify parts.
Fig 1) A TT shaped piece of metal manufactured from spring grade steel, one arm has a tab formed on its extremity at right angles to the width of the formed piece of steel at right angles facing in the direction of the other extended arm, The other arm has in Line with the tab formed a cutout.
Fig 2) A moulded Cover which fits over one arm of the ty shaped metal form fig 1, and is of ergonomic form manufactured from High Impact Polystyrene or mouldable Plastic.
Fig 3) A Thumbwheel with an M5 thread with a the top face having a recess.
Fig 4) A Blade manufactured from carbon Steel, Heat treated with one edge formed into a knife shape having one face longer than the other, with a hole mid section to secure.
Fig 5) Fig 1, 2 and 4 are held together using Pop Rivets the thumb wheel Fig 3 is inserted through Fig 1 and 2 via a Tapped hole in Fig 1 and a clearance hole in Fig 2.

Claims (4)

  1. CLAIMS 1. A Hand held cutting device having the following characteristics, a blade mounted on a sprung frame which imparts a force that needs to be overcome to creating a cutting action, the held part being protected by a cover, the depth of cut being determined by a Screw which acts to stop the sprung frame compressing beyond a predetermined point, The blade being behind a guard when not in use.
  2. 2. A cutting device as in Claim 1, but having a replaceable blade.
  3. 3. A cutting device as in Claim 1 or Claim 2 but having a cam or wedge to control the predetermined depth of cutting.
  4. 4. A cutting device as in Claim 1 or Claim 2 but not having means to control the depth of cut.
