Description

2339209 IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO CONTAINERS This invention relates
to containers and more particularly is concerned with containers for accommodating compositions for disinfecting or otherwise treating the water in the toilet bowl of a water closet.
It is known to provide compositions containing constituents such as antimicrobial agents, perfumes, bleaching agents, colourants and/cr foaming agent for use in treating the water in toilet bowls. Ordinarily, the compositions are in the form of coherent self supporting blocks in cage-like containers suspended near the rim of the toilet bowl in a position where, on each occasion the toilet bowl is flushed, the flushing water enters the container and contacts the block to entrain some of the composition before flowing into the lower part of the bowl. Thus the water remaining in the bowl, after the flushing, includes some of the composition which disinfects or otherwise treats the water and the adjacent surfaces of the bowl.
More recently, compositions in the form of liquids or gels have been proposed. These have a relatively high viscosity such that they are retained in the container. During flushing, water enters the container and dilutes a part of the paste or gel to form a relatively low viscosity composition which is able to egress from the container and flow into the bowl.
During use, the amount of composition remaining in the container gradually reduces and eventually it is necessary to renew the composition. In the case where the composition is in the form of a block, a replacement block, or refill, can be purchased for the container. Although these are supplied suitably packaged, it is necessary to remove the packaging before opening the container and introducing the replacement block or refill. The nature of the composition is such that it is unpleasant to handle and it is an object of the present invention to avoid the need for the consumer to handle the composition when it is desired to introduce further composition in the container.
It is a further disadvantage of conventional containers that the part of the container which accommodates the composition tends to become contaminated over time and aesthetically unpleasant.
According to the present invention there is provided a container for accommodating a composition for treating the water in the toilet bowl of a water closet, which container comprises a first component including means to secure the container to the toilet bowl and a second component in the form of a cartridge containing said composition, said second component being releasably connected to said firEyt component.
By means of the present invention, when the composition in the container has been used up, it is merely necessary to disconnect the second component from the first component and replace it with another second component containing further composition. Thus, it is not necessary for the consumer to handle the composition. Further, another second component is u sed every time fresh composition is introduced into the container and thus there is less time for unsightly contaminants to build up in that part of the container containing the composition.
In an embodiment, the first component is in the form of a clip-like receiving portion into which the second component can be inserted and the components include co-operable parts which inter-engage to connect the components together when the second component is in position but which are dis-engageable when it is desired to replace the second component.
In another embodiment, the second component is in the form of a drawer and the first component is in the form of a body including a receiving portion in the form of a recess into which the drawer can be slid, co operable parts again being provided to retain the drawer in the recess but to allow the drawer to be removed from the recess when it is to be replaced.
The co-operable parts may comprise an aperture-defining portion in one of the components and a protruding portion in the other of the components, at least one of said portions being sufficiently resilient to allow them to be mechanically engaged together and subsequently disengaged.
The means to secure the container to the toilet bowl may be in the form of a hook-like portion to enable the container to be suspended at the rim of the toilet bowl in a position where flushing water can enter the container and contact the composition.
Alternatively, the means to secure the container to the toilet bowl may be in the form of sucker pads capable of being held against the toilet bowl by atmospheric air pressure.
In accordance with a particularly preferred embodiment, the present invention provides a conta-i-ner for accommodating a composition for treating the water in the toilet bowl of a water closet, which container comprises a first component, which includes a means to secure the container to the toilet bowl, and a second component in the form of a cartridge containing said composition and insertable into a receiving portion of the first component, said components including parts which can be selectively interengaged to releasably retain the cartridge in the receiving portion.
For a better understanding of the invention and to show how the same may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figures la and lb are perspective views from the front of a first container in accordance with the present invention, with its first and second components engaged and disengaged, respectively, Figure 2 is a perspective view from the front of a second container in accordance with the present invention, and Figure 3 is a perspective view from the rear of a third container in accordance with the invention.
Referring now to Figure 1, there is shown a container comprising a first component 1 formed of plastics material and a second component 2 in the form is of a cartridge also formed of plastics material and containing a block 3 of a composition for treating the water in the toilet bowl of a water closet. The first component 1 includes a receiving portion in the form of a laterally open recess 4 into which the second component 2 can be slid, in the direction shown by arrow A, so that the first and second components together provide a cage-like chamber for the block 3.
The first component I includes a part 5 in recess 4 which defines an aperture 6 and the second component 2 includes a bifurcated tongue 7. The dimensions of-the aperture 6 and of the tongue 7 are such that they can co-operate together by making an interference fit whereby the first and second components 1 and 2 are connected together. The components 1 and 2 can be separated by holding the first component 1 at position X and pulling the second component 2 away therefrom.
The container --includes a hook-like portion in the form of a resilient strap 8 formed of polypropylene having one end attached to the first component 1 and a free end 9. Ordinarily, because of its resilient nature, the strap coils up about itself with the free end 9 in the middle of the coil as shown. In use, the consumer manually uncoils the strap and fits it over the rim (not shown) of the toilet bowl so that the chamber defined by the first and second components 1 and 2 is located in the path of the flushing water during the flushing operation.
In use, the flushing water enters into the chamber via apertures in the chamber wall and contacts the block 3 before leaving the chamber via lower apertures and then falling into the lower part of the toilet bowl. As it passes over the block 3 in the chamber, the flushing water entrains some of the composition of the block and this composition then treat.s the water in the toilet bowl.
During the passage of time, all of the block 3 becomes used up. Then, the second component 2 is slid out of the recess 4 and replaced by another second component 2 containing a fresh block 3 of the composition. Thus the consumer merely -needs to handle the cartridge containing the block rather than the block itself.
Referring now to Figure 2, the container comprises a first component 11 formed by injection molding and including a receiving portion in the form of a generally C-shaped clip comprising a rear planar meember 12 linking a pair of planar side members 13 and 14.
The side member 14 includes at its end, an inclined portion 15 defining with the end of side member 13 an entrance to the receiving portion.
The container includes a second component 16 in the form of a thermo formed or injection moulded cartridge containing a block (not shown) of a composition for treating the water in the toilet bowl of a water closet. The second component includes apertures 17 to enable flushing water to enter the chamber and contact the block therein. The side member 13 of the first component 11 includes portions defining an aperture 18 and the corresponding side wall of the second component 16 includes a protrusion in the form of a peg 19 of a dimension that it can pass through the aperture. The second component 16 is f itted into the receiving portion of the first component 11 by firstly inserting that end of the component 16 which is opposite the end including the peg 19 through the entrance and locating it between the inclined member 15 and the rear member 12 and then pushing the second component 16 in a direction towards the rear member 12 as shown by the arrow whilst flexing the side member 13 to enable it to pass over the peg 19 so that the peg can enter the aperture 18 and co-operate with the aperture-defining portion to retain the second component in position.
The first component 11 also includes a hook-like portion 20 in the form of a generally U-shaped member comprising a first limb 21 having a first end integrally formed with the rear member 12, a second limb 22 having a free end and a linking portion 23 joining the limbs 21 and 22 at their other ends. The shape and dimensions of the U-shaped member are such that it can be suspended from the rim of the toilet 2S bowl with the chamber positioned in the path of th-e flushing water.
when the block in the second compartment 16 has been exhausted, the second component is removed from the receiving portion by flexing the side member 13 to enable the peg 19 to be withdrawn from the aperture 18 and the second component 16 is then replaced by another second component 16 containing a fresh block of the composition.
If desired, both side members 13 and 14 can be provided with apertures 18 in which case both corresponding side walls of the second component 16 will include protrusions 19.
Referring now to Figure 3, the container of this embodiment comprises a first component 31 including a receiving portion into which a second component 32 in the form of a cartridge containing a block (not shown) of the composition can be slid, in the manner of a drawer, and retained in a manner similar to that described in Figure 1. In this case, however, instead of including a hook-like portion to enable the container to be suspended from the rim of the toilet bowl, the container includes a pair of sucker members formed of elastomeric material 33 whereby the container may be held against the interior of the toilet bowl by atmospheric air pressure. As in the case of the previous embodiments, when the block is exhausted as a consequence of it being contacted by the flushing water, the second component 32 can be disengaged from the first component 31 and replaced by another second component 32 containing a fresh block 6f the composition.
Although the above containers have been described as including the treating composition in the form of a coherent self-supporting block, the containers may be modified as appropriate so as to accommodate compositions in liquid or gel form.
