Abstract

A dual-purpose C-clamp and adhesive applicator with a fixed handle (10) containing a driving handle (11) with a circular holding seat (14) in front of the handle (10) and a moveable jaw (121, Figure 1) fixed to a push rod (12). A C-shaped frame (20) ends in a fixed jaw (40, Figure 1) and is fixed to the holding seat (14) by means of screws. When used as an adhesive applicator, the fixed jaw is removed, and an adhesive spreader (50) is clamped to the frame (20) using a resiliently deformable holding device (30).

Description

C-CLAMP ASSEMBLIES Field of the Invention This invention relates to a C-clamp assembly and, in particular to a C-clamp assembly which can also be used as an adhesive applicator for the application of silicone putty, size, paste and other adhesives.
Most adhesive applicators cannot be converted to C-clamp assemblies and most C-clamp assemblies cannot be converted to adhesive applicators.
It is accordingly an object of the present invention to provide a C-clamp assembly which can be converted to an adhesive applicator which can be operated efficiently.
Summary of the Invention According to the present invention there is provided a Cclamp assembly which is convertible to an adhesive applicator, said C-clamp assembly comprising: a) a fixed handle, b) a circular holding seat disposed in front of the fixed handle, c) a driving handle mounted within the fixed handle, d) a push rod extending through the circular holding seat and the fixed handle, e) a movable jaw mounted on the forward end of the push rod, f) a generally C-shaped frame extending forwardly away from the circular holding seat, g) a fixed jaw located at the front end of the generally C shaped frame, h) the fixed jaw including a lobe which is held between an arcuate locating formation disposed at the front end of the generally C-shaped frame and an arcuate bracket fastened to the locating formation by means of screws, and i) a resiliently deformable holding device detachably engaged with the C-shaped frame, j) the holding device having a recess at its lower end to receive the generally C-shaped frame, and the upper portion of the holding device including a pair of part cylindrical plates which terminate at their upper ends in outwardly turned lips.
Brief Descrintion of the Drawings Figure I is an exploded perspective view of a C-clamp assembly in accordance with the invention, Figure 2 is a perspective view of the C-clamp assembly of Figure 1 when being used for clamping purposes, Figure 3 is a side elevational view of the assembly of Figure 2, Figure 4 is a perspective view of the C-clamp assembly of Figure 1 when being used as an adhesive applicator, and Figure 5 is a side elevational view of Figure 4.
Description of the Preferred Embodiment As shown in Figures 1 to 3, a C-clamp assembly comprises a fixed handle 10, a circular holding seat 14 disposed at the front of the fixed handle 10, an operating or driving handle 11 mounted within the interior 13 of the fixed handle 10, and a push rod 12 which passes through the circular holding seat 14 and the fixed handle 10 and is movable longitudinally on actuation of the operating or driving handle 11.
A movable jaw 121 is mounted at the front end of the push rod 12 and a generally C-shaped frame 20 extends forwardly from the circular holding seat 14. A resiliently deformable holding device 30 formed from a synthetic plastics material is fitted releasably to the generally C-shaped frame 20 and a fixed jaw 40 is disposed at the front end of the generally C-shaped frame.
As shown in Figure 1, the forward end portion of the generally C-shaped frame 20 is shaped to provide an arcuate, i.e. a semicylindrical locating formation 21 to receive a lobe 41 of the fixed jaw 40 which is held in position by means of an arcuate bracket 22 fastened to the locating formation 21 by means of screws n. The bracket 22 and the locating formation 21 thus combine to define a cylindrical bore 23 in one end of which the lobe 41 is received1 as shown in Figure 3.
The rear end portion of the generally C-shaped frame 20 fits in a space 141 between a pair of parallel flanges of the circular holding seat 14 and is fixed in position by means of a pair of fasteners p.
The holding device 30 is provided at its bottom with a recess 31 which fits resiliently over the main body portion of the generally C-shaped frame 20. The upper portion of the holding device 30 comprises two part-cylindrical plates 32 which terminate at their upper ends with outwardly turned lips 33.
When the C-clamp assembly of the present invention is used for clamping purposes, the holding device 30 is detached from the generally C-shaped frame 20 and the C-clamp assembly is used in the manner illustrated in Figures 2 and 3.
When the C-clamp assembly is to be used as an adhesive applicator, the holding device 30 is placed in position, as shown in Figures 4 and 5, and the fixed front jaw 40 is removed by undoing the screws n and releasing the grip exerted by the bracket 22 and the locating formation 21 on the lobe 41. A tubular adhesive spreader 50 is then engaged with the holding device 30 by displacing the two lips 33 away from one another and moving the tubular body of the adhesive spreader 50 downwardly so that it is gripped resiliently by the two part-cylindrical plates 32. As shown, the adhesive spreader 50 has a nozzle 51 which is inserted in the cylindrical bore 23 defined by the bracket 22 and the locating formation 21. The rear end of the tubular body of the adhesive spreader 50 is closed by the circular holding seat 14.
When, therefore, the adhesive spreader 50 is fitted in position, as shown in Figure 5, actuation of the operating or driving handle 11, will cause forward movement of the push rod 12 and the movable jaw 121 thereby forcing the adhesive within the tubular body of the adhesive spreader 50 out of the nozzle 51 at a controllable rate.
When it is desired to use the assembly once more as a clamp, the adhesive spreader 50 will be detached from the holding device 30, the holding device 30 will be detached from the generally C-shaped frame 20 and the fixed jaw 40 will be returned to its original position, as shown in Figures 2 and 3.
The device of the present invention is thus readily convertible from a clamp assembly to an adhesive applicator.

Claims (3)

  1. Claims:- 1. A C-clamp assembly which is convertible to an adhesive applicator, said C-clamp assembly comprising:a) a fixed handle, b) a circular holding seat disposed in front of the fixed handle, c) a driving handle mounted within the fixed handle, d) a push rod extending through the circular holding seat and the fixed handle, e) a movable jaw mounted on the forward end of the push rod, f) a generally C-shaped frame extending forwardly from the circular holding seat, g) a fixed jaw located at the front end of the generally C shaped frame, h) the fixed jaw including a lobe which is held between an arcuate locating formation disposed at the front end of the generally C-shaped frame and an arcuate bracket fastened to the locating formation by means of screws, and i) a resiliently deformable holding device detachably engaged with the generally C-shaped frame, j) the holding device having a recess at its lower end to receive the generally C-shaped frame, and the upper portion of the holding device including a pair of part cylindrical plates which terminate at their upper ends in outwardly turned lips.
  2. 2. A C-clamp assembly as claimed in Claim 1, in which the rear end of the generally C-shaped frame is inserted in a space beneath the circular holding seat and is held in position by fasteners which pass through the rear end of the generally C-shaped frame and a pair of flanges of the circular holding seat.
  3. 3. A C-clamp assembly which is convertible to an adhesive applicator, said clamp assembly being constructed and arranged for operation substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawings.
