Abstract

In a pneumatic tyre a ply 28 is secured at each edge by respective inner and outer concentric pinch hoops 24, 26 in the bead region of the tyre. The hoops may be of spring steel.

Description

Title: Improvements in Tyre Manufacture This invention is concerned with improvements in tyre manufacture, particularly with regard to the locking of a ply layer in the region of a tyre bead.
The ply layer of a tyre should be held in the region of the bead in order to enable the ply to support tension forces in the tyre.
Without means for holding the ply in that way, the ply would tend to pull away from the bead region of the tyre. That would lead to failure of the tyre.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a tyre construction which is less susceptible to the above identified problems.
According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of manufacturing a tyre, the method comprising the step of pinching an edge of ply material between inner and outer concentric hoops in the bead region of a tyre.
In that way, the ply is securely anchored so that failure due to separation of the ply from the bead is less likely to occur.
Preferably, each hoop is formed by spinning a strip of metal into a curved shape.
The outer hoop may in use be a larger diameter than its natural diameter, such that it tends to urge the ply inwardly. The inner hoop may in use be a smaller diameter than its natural diameter, such that it tends to urge the ply outwardly.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the method comprises the steps of providing a support on which a tyre is to be formed, the support defining on each side a bead radius, placing two inner hoops adjacent the support, one each side of the support, wrapping a layer of ply material about the support and inner hoops, and placing two outer hoops adjacent the support, each over a respective inner hoop.
The step of placing each outer hoop may comprise placing an outer hoop over the ply and inner hoop and spinning the outer hoop until the ply is trapped between the inner and outer hoops.
According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided a pneumatic tyre comprising a ply secured on each side by a respective anchoring portion, each anchoring portion comprising outer and inner concentric pinch hoops defining a gap therebeween and in which gap the ply is anchored.
Each pinch hoop is preferably of spring steel; each pinch hoop may be a complete circle.
In each anchoring portion, the outer pinch hoop is preferably under stress such that the outer hoop urges against the inner hoop. In each anchoring portion, the inner pinch hoop is preferably under stress such that the inner hoop urges against the outer hoop.
Further aspects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description of a specific embodiment of apparatus for use in accordance with the invention with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a diagonal view of a station for the application of a bead lock to ply; and Figure 2 is a fragmentary cross section through a portion of tyre incorporating a bead lock formed by a specific method in accordance with the invention.
Figure 1 illustrates a system 10 in which a support 12 has a profile corresponding to the near final shape of a pneumatic tyre. Furthermore, the support 12 has side portions 14 which are generally cylindrical and have radius corresponding to the desired bead radius of a tyre to be formed thereon. The support 12 is rotatable about its axis.
Extending tangentially of the support 12 is a saddle guide 16 which, at its end farthest from the support 12, is generally planar and, at its end nearest the support 12, has a profile corresponding to the profile of the support 12.
The saddle guide 16 is operative to guide a supply of ply material to the support 12. The saddle guide 16 has, at its end farthest from the support 12, a cutter 18 which is operative to cut across the supply of ply material.
The saddle guide further has, at its end nearest the support 12, a set of rollers 20, 22. The set comprises two pairs of side rollers 20 which are arranged to pinch the side portions of ply folded over the saddle guide 16. It will be understood that figure 1 only shows the side rollers 20 for one side of the saddle guide 16. Furthermore, the set of rollers comprises a crown roller which in use engages the central or crown portion of the ply against the saddle guide 16.
In use, two suitably formed inner bead hoops 24 of appropriate material are placed over the side portions 1 of the support 12, one on each side. An appropriate material for those hoops is spring steel. Then, a stretch of ply material is drawn along the saddle guide 16 and onto the rotating support 12. The ply is cut off by the cutter 18. The ply is suitably sufficiently wide that the edges of the ply lap over to the side portions 14 of the support 12 and cover the inner hoops 24 installed thereon.
Thereafter, two outer hoops 26 are provided, and each is placed over a respective side portion 14 of the support 12. Each outer hoop 26 is then spun down in size so that the outer hoop presses against the inner hoop 24 and ply, to provide a suitable anchor.
Figure 2 shows an example of an anchor formed in accordance with the above described method. The portion illustrated includes a ply layer 28 trapped between an inner hoop 24 having a generally lozenge shaped profile, and an outer hoop 26 having a generally L-shaped profile. The inner hoop 24 fits within the recess defined in the outer hoop 26. The hoops 24, 26 together define a bead. The ply 28 is trapped between the hoops 24, 26. In that way, the ply 28 is anchored against separation from the bead defined by the hoops 24, 26.
The invention is useful in that it provides a method whereby preformed bead portions can be brought together with a ply and the ply can then be locked thereto in an improved manner. No bead winding step is necessary. Furthermore, the ply is locked with respect to the bead without the need for a ply turn-up. That can improve the efficiency of a tyre formed in the above manner, and thus the fuel consumption of a vehicle fitted with such tyres.
