Abstract

A ventilator arrangement for a room requiring an air supply for a combustion unit, said ventilator arrangement including an interior outlet means, said interior outlet means comprising a carrier 3 which is arranged to be offset from a wall by an amount which provides a peripheral gap to permit air flow, and an ornamental cover 5 which covers the carrier, the carrier having an inspection aperture 4 covered by said cover and the ornamental cover being openable or removable so that access can be obtained for inspection through the aperture to ensure that the ventilator is free of obstruction and so permits adequate ventilation.

Description

VENTILATOR The present invention relates to a ventilator for admitting air to an enclosed space typically a living or working room. The ventilator will usually be passive, i.e. without a fan or equivalent, however a fan may be incorporated if necessary.
Good building practice and in some countries legislation insists that, if a room or other enclosed space incorporates a combustion appliance particularly a gas, oil or solid fuel fired heater or boiler the space is adequately vented. A combustion appliance burns not only fuel but also the oxygen in the air and if sufficient fresh air is not provided then the unit will tend to use available oxygen in the room. Additionally if air supply to the appliance is inadequate noxious or possibly toxic combustion products may find their way into the room.
The present practice is to form a hole in an outside wall and to provide at the outside of the hole a slatted air brick or equivalent and at the inside a ventilator grill.
An inserted structure usually prefabricated of plastic connects the air brick and grill and constitutes a cavity lining.
The interior outlet of the ventilator will normally be visible within the room and may be constituted by a plastics moulding including slats to permit air ingress.
However, such an interior outlet is generally utilitarian and if used within a living room may be considered unsightly. Moreover gas fired simulated opera fires in a living room generally require adequate ventilation such as from a wall ventilator.
The present invention therefore is concerned with the problem of providing an air ventilator having an interior outlet which can be arranged to be pleasing to the eye as well as satisfying operational requirements.
Accordingly the invention provides a ventilator arrangement for a room requiring an air supply for a combustion unit, said ventilator arrangement including an interior outlet means, said interior outlet means comprising a carrier having aperturing and being arranged to be offset from a wall by an amount whicn provides a peripheral gap to permit air flow, and an ornamental cover which covers the aperturing of said apertured carrier.
The ornamental cover may be a decorative ceramic tile or may be a decorative piece of polished wood, or may be a picture or photograph, or may be a tile covered in a decorative medium such as wallpaper.
It is desirable that the ornamental cover is openable or removable so that access can be obtained for inspection through the aperturing to ensure that the ventilator is free of obstruction and so permits adequate ventilation.
To this end the ornamental cover may be attached by a snap fitment or by a velcro (Registered Trade Mark) fastening.
Generally in a preferred arrangement the ventilator will be carried on upstanding pins which provide sufficient offset to define the peripheral gap, and preferably the height of these pins will be adjustable to adjust the level of air flow. Conveniently adjustment means for adjusting said height can be accommodated under the decorative cover.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings in which: Figure 1 shows schematically a ducting arrangement for a ventilator excluding the inlet end; Figure 2 shows a sectional view of the ventilator in situ; and Figure 3 shows an interior outlet in exploded form.
Referring to Figure 1, a suitably shaped exterior inlet 1 is connected in an aperture of a wall and includes a cylindrical hollow duct 2 leading into the interior of a room.
Referring to Figure 3, an interior outlet in accordance with the present invention is attached to the end of the ducting 2 and comprises a frame carrier 3 including a circular aperture 4 and a decorative closure 5 which is arranged to seat on the frame 3 to close the aperture 4.
The frame 3 has bevelled edges and a secondary bevelled frame surrounding the seating area for the tile 5 and is arranged to be connected to the wall with a peripheral gap (see Figure 2). The peripheral gap 6 encircles the frame 3 and provides a space for air to pass from the inlet 1 and through the duct 2 to the interior of the room. The frame 3 is mounted on the wall by means of four upstanding pins 7 (see Figure 3) which can be embedded in concrete within the brick exterior of the wall or attached to the wall in any other suitable way.
The interior end of the bolts 7 can then be attached to the frame 3 by virtue of nut adjustment points 8. Thus, in use by screwing on the nuts 8 the frame position can be adjusted so as to increase or decrease the peripheral gap 6 for adjustment of the volumetric flow capability.
Finally the decorative closure 5, shown as a ceramic tile, is attached within the frame 3 either by a velcro fastening or by a snap fitment and thereby covers the inspection aperture 4 and also covers the adjustment points 8.

Claims (7)

1. A ventilator arrangement for a room requiring an air supply for a combustion unit, said ventilator arrangement including an interior outlet means, said interior outlet means comprising a carrier which is arranged to be offset from a wall by an amount which provides a peripheral gap to permit air flow, and an ornamental cover which covers the carrier.
2. A ventilator arrangement according to Claim 1 in which the carrier has an inspection aperture covered by said cover and the ornamental cover is openable or removable so that access can be obtained for inspection through the aperture to ensure that the ventilator is free of obstruction and so permits adequate ventilation.
3. A ventilator arrangement according to Claim 1 or 2 in which the ornamental cover is attached by a releasable fastening.
4. A ventilator arrangement according to any preceding claim in which the ventilator interior outlet means is carried on upstanding pins which provide sufficient offset to define the peripheral gap.
5. A ventilator arrangement according to Claim 4 in which said pins constitute adjustment means for adjusting the level of air flow.
6. A ventilator arrangement according to Claim 5 in which said adjustment means is accommodated under the decorative cover.
7. A ventilator arrangement substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings.

Amendments to the claims have been filed as follows CLAIMS 1. A ventilator arrangement for a room requiring an air supply for a combustion unit, said ventilator arrangement including an interior outlet means communicating with the exterior via an unrestricted duct, said interior outlet means comprising a carrier which is arranged to be offset from a wall by an amount which provides a peripheral gap providing a space through which all the air passing through the duct can flow to the interior of the room and an ornamental cover which covers the carrier.
2. A ventilator arrangement according to Claim 1 in which the carrier has an inspection aperture covered by said cover and the ornamental cover is openable or removable so that access can be obtained for inspection through the aperture to ensure that the ventilator is free of obstruction and so permits adequate ventilation.
3. A ventilator arrangement according to Claim 1 or 2 in which the ornamental cover is attached by a releasable fastening.
4. A ventilator arrangement according to any preceding claim in which the ventilator interior outlet means is carried on upstanding pins which provide sufficient offset to define the peripheral gap.
5. A ventilator arrangement according to Claim 4 in which said pins constitute adjustment means for adjusting the level of air flow.
6. A ventilator arrangement according to Claim 5 in which said adjustment means is accommodated under the decorative cover.
