UNITED STATES PATENT rares.
LOUIS VBOUTIN, OF ALBURG, VERMONT.
VENTILATI NG-CHIVINEY..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent-No. 390,337, dated October 2, 1888.
Application filed December 28, i887. Serial Nrn-259,926. (No model.)
To aZZ whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, LoUIs BoU'rIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alburg, in the county of Grand Isle and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ventilating-Chimneys; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appert-ains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to chimneys and ventilators for buildings, and the improvements will be fully understood from the following description and claim, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, in which- Figure lis a side elevation of a chimney con st ructed according to my improvements. Fig. 21s a vertical sectional view of the same, taken on the plane indicated by the lines yy of Fig. 4. Fig. 3 is also a vertical sectional View taken on the plane indicated by the lines x x of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a erosssectional view taken on the plane indicated by the lines z a of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is an inverted view of the cap removed from the chimney to show the spark-arrester, and Fig. 6 is a plan view of the base with the chimney removed. y
Referring by letter to the said drawings, A indicates thebase, which may be of cast-iron or other suitable material. This base is provided centrally on its upper side with a rectangular elevation, a, which is designed to receive snugly and interiorly the lower end of the smoke-flue B and iirmly seat the same, closing its lower end from communication with the ventilating-iiue,which will be presently de-V scribed. This smoke-flue B is provided at a suitable point with a door, as at a', whereby access may be had for the purpose of cleaning it, and the said flue is also provided with a suitable number of pipe-holes, as b, whereby a stove in any room may be properly connected with said flue.
C indicates a Ventilating-flue, which is designed to surround the smoke-flue and leave a vertical passage between the same. This flue C is placed upon the base and secured in place by means of strips c, which comprise a rectangular frame, and hug the lower end of the said iiue. This flue is also provided with a door and pipe-holes,which should coincide, respectively, with the door and pipe-holes of the smoke-liuc. This ilne 0r casing C is also provided with a suitable number of registers, d, which may open into the different compartments of a building for the purpose of ventilating them, and it is further provided with suitable openings, as e, which may receive a pipe connected with a water-closet sewer, or the like, so as to carry off the impurities and discharge them above the house or other structure. These latter openings e may have gates, as f, whereby the same may be closed when desired. p
The base A is also provided within. the walls of the Ventilating-flue and exterior to the smoke-due with a suitable number of draftapertures, g, and also with larger apertures, h, to receive a pipe or other means of connecting them with the cellar or otherpart of a build ing. These latter apertures are also provided with gates, so that the same may be closed vwhen desired. The Ventilating flue or casing may be provided with a suitable dashing, as shown at F, and near its upper end is a series of apertures, k, which arerin the four walls thereof, and around this apertnred portion is a cornice, G, which is also provided with similar apertures in its flaring walls, so as to pre vent a downward blast of air from coming forcibly into the chimney.
I indicates the cap for both ilues, which serves the additional function of a spark-an rester. This cap has a marginal skirtdiange, Z, which is designed to receivesuugly the upper edge of the cornice, and is also recessed at m to receive the upper end of the casing or ventilatingtlue, so as to close the same from communication with the smoke-flue. This portion is provided with a perforated part, u, which is elevated, as shown, so that its side walls, p, will engage the outer walls of the said smokeilue and close the same from communicationwith the ventilatingiiue. This perforated portion forms a cover for the smoke-flue, and consequently prevents any sparks or the like from escaping. Exterior to the perforated cap are a series of vertical apertures, r,whieh are directly above the Ventilating-flue and form outlets therefor.
L indicates a hood or cowl for the main cap or cover. This cowl or storm-cover is supported at a sufficient distance above the perforated part by legs or supports, and is suffi- ICO ciently broad to cover the outlet-apertures for the Ventilating-Hue.
In each corner of the casing I arrange a vertical rod, M, which extends from top to bottom thereof. These rods are designed to strengthen the main case and add durability to the entire structure.
By the construction illustrated it will be seen that each room or compartment may be thoroughly ventilated, as Well as impure gases and odors carried above the house-top. It will also be seen that sparks will be prevented from passing out of the chimney without offering any obstruction to the smoke and particles of combustion.
It will further be seen that in case of storni the cowl and cap are so constructed as to prevent the wind from forcibly entering either the smokeiiue or Ventilating-flue.
Having described my i1ivention,wl1atIclaim zo 1s The combination, with the base, the smokeiue, and Ventilating-flue having the perforated cornioe which communicates with the interior of the said Ventilating-flue, and the 25 cap constructed as shown, having the perfo rated center to cover the smoke-tine, the perforated ange to'cover the top ofthe ventilating-flue, and the marginal flange to cover the top ofthe cornice, and the cowl secured to the 3o s'aid cap, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I afx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LOUIS BOUTIN.
