Abstract

Glass aquaria or aqua-terraria 12 are fragile and susceptible to breakage. External impact can result in such breakage or vibrations which can cause the escape, shock or death of the aquariums or aqua-terrariums inhabitants. By enclosing the aquarium or aqua-terrarium within unbreakable protective barriers 10 and 16 and an air gap 17, the aquarium or aqua-terrarium and their inhabitants are rendered safe from external impact.

Description

PROTECTIVE ENCLOSURE FOR GLASS AQUARIA OR AQUA-TERRARIA This invention relates to protection from impact damage to fragile glass aquaria or aqua-terraria.
Aquariums and aqua-terrariums are used to house fish, insects, amphibians, reptiles and small mammals. Nearly all aquariums and aqua-terrariums purchased in the United Kingdom are constructed from glass using silicone adhesives. Glass is fragile and susceptible to external impact damage and any breakage can result in the escape, shock or death of the aquariums or aqua-terrariums inhabitants and possible injury from cuts to the person that causes the damage.
According to the present invention there is provided a protective enclosure for a fragile glass aquarium or aquaterrarium to isolate them behind barriers of transparent, unbreakable polycarbonate or other polymerized material, safety glass or laminated glass and opaque wood derived sheet materials to prevent breakage of the aquarium or aqua-terrarium and the escape, shock or death of aquatic or other living beings through external impact. Further protection is provided by an air gap between the aquarium or aqua-terrarium and the external barriers to minimize the transmission of vibrations from an external source to the aquariums or aqua-terrariums inhabitants.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of an example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 shows in perspective, a typical aquarium or aquaterrarium enclosure.
Figure 2 shows a cross-section of a typical aquarium or aqua-terrarium enclosure illustrating the relationship between protective barriers, the air gaps and the aquarium or aquaterrarium.
Referring to the drawing, the enclosure comprises a cabinet fabricated from opaque wood derived sheet materials 10 with an access lid 11. The glass aquarium or aqua-terrarium 12 is placed within the enclosure on a supporting shelf 13 and cushioned by a sheet of polystyrene or other resilient material 14. Viewing apertures 15 are provided in the enclosure through which the inhabitants of the aquarium or aqua-terrarium can be observed. These viewing apertures are covered internally by barriers of transparent polycarbonate or unbreakable glass 16. Air gaps 17 further insulate the aquarium or aquaterrarium from external vibrations.

Claims (3)

1 A protective enclosure for a fragile glass aquarium or aqua-terrarium to isolate them behind barriers of transparent, unbreakable polycarbonate or other polymerized material, safety glass or laminated glass and opaque wood derived sheet materials to prevent breakage of the aquarium or aqua-terrarium and the escape, shock or death of aquatic or other living beings through external impact.
2 A protective enclosure for a fragile glass aquarium or aqua-terrarium as claimed in Claim 1 wherein an air gap is provided between the aquarium or aqua-terrarium and the external barriers to minimize the transmission of vibrations from an external source to the aquariums or aqua-terrariums inhabitants.
3 A protective enclosure for a fragile glass aquarium or aqua-terrarium substantially as described herein with reference to Figures 1-2 of the accompanying drawing.
