Abstract

232,328. Faudi, F. Jan. 16, 1924. Axles and axle structures.-In a joint for tubes and rods 1, 2, of the spigot-and-socket type, shown as applied to the making of a motor vehicle axle, in which the socket member 2 is pressed into engagement with projections or grooves on the spigot member 3, formed on the rod 1, a collar or flange 6, formed integrally with the spigot 3, is externally applied to the socket in such a manner that it serves as an additional holding means for protection of the joint against tensional or torsional strains, and also prevents tearing of the edge of the tube 2. In assembling the joint, the end of the tube 2 is shrunk on to the spigot 3, which is provided with circumferential and longitudinal grooves 4, 5, and further acted upon by a pressing ring, which is held in position until the tube has cooled, after which the collar 6 is heated and pressed against the end of the tube 2, which may be furnished with a circular groove 7 for the reception thereof. In a modification, the spigot is formed with borings or other depressions at any desired distance apart, and is adapted to fit tightly into the tube 2, which is pressed cold into the borings by a die.
