Abstract

232,323. Armstrong, Whitworth, & Co., Ltd., Sir W. G., Lee, H. W., and Swindale, J. W. Jan. 15, 1924. Addition to 215,896. Loading-appliances. - Relates to the ratchet hoist claimed in the parent Specification, the loading and unloading scuttle 10 of which is intermittently rotated through a one-way clutch by wheels 13, 14 driven by a screw device 15 operated by the sliding ratchet-bars. According to the present invention, the clutch is locked when the scuttle is turning and can be disconnected only when the scuttle registers with the loading opening in the hoist casing, and further, the clutch is automatically disconnected at each half revolution of the scuttle to permit ammunition to be safelv inserted in the scuttle at the top of the hoist when lowering ammunition and at the bottom of the hoist when raising ammunition. Figs. 1 and 2 show the clutch gear at the bottom of the hoist in the lowering position. The central portion 16 of the clutch, which is feathered on a sleeve 11 depending from the scuttle 10, carries (1) a ratchet-toothed ring 160 for engagement with spring-pressed rollers 170 on the upper clutch member 29 which is keyed to the wheel 13, (2) spring-pressed rollers 190 for engagement with a ratchet-toothed ring 30 keyed to the wheel 14, and (3) an intermediate member 32 connected to a bell-crank lever 24, 22 which rocks on a. shaft 23 to operate the clutch. The arm 22 on one side of the clutch carries projections 222, 223 which register with slots 27, 28 in the rings 29, 30 at each half revolution. When raising ammunition, the clutch is lowered and the projection 222 rides beneath the ring 29 to prevent the clutch from being disengaged until the half revolution has been made when the clutch is automatically raised to neutral position by the engagement of a projection 34 with a roller 33. The scuttle at the top of the hoist is controlled by a similar clutch when lowering ammunition.
