Abstract

Loading-appliances.-Ratchet hoists of the kind described in Specifications 169,748 and 173,029 are provided at each end with a rotatable ammunition receptacle or scuttle in the form of two troughs 281, 282 placed back to back (see plan Fig. 3), one trough being in the receiving position whilst the other is in the delivery position, the rotation of the scuttle in contact with the inner surface of the hoist 10 under the action of a ratchet slider 11 serving to move the ammunition into and out of the hoist in flash-tight manner. Fig. 1 shows the arrangement of the upper end of the hoist. For the purpose of rotating the scuttle, the slider 11, which carries the lifting pawls 12 as described in the above-mentioned Specifications, is provided with a quick-pitched screw 14 for rotating a sleeve nut 15. This nut carries a spur wheel 171 gearing with a spur wheel 20 which rotates the shaft 231 of the scuttle through a bevel wheel 21 and clutch 23. When the slider 11 moves in one direction, the scuttle is rotated through 180‹, and when the slider returns the scuttle remains stationary to permit of charging and discharging the troughs. This intermittent motion is effected through the one-way clutch 23. The projectile 13 is taken from the scuttle and lowered into horizontal position by a tray 35 hinged to the hoist at 42 and rocked by a lever 40 engaging a cam groove 391 in a disc 39 driven through a counter-shaft and bevel gears from the wheel 20. A projection 392 on the cam disc also engages a roller 421, which through a link 43 rocks a hook 34 on the tray into engagement with the projectile to cause the projectile to descend with the tray. The projectiles may also be pushed from the troughs by levers 48 operated by a central rod 501 raised by a projection on the cam disc. The tray 35 is provided with a hinged flap 352 (see plan, Fig. 12), which is raised by a projection on the pivoted receiving-tray 45 to cause the projectiles to roll on to the receiving-tray. The troughs of the scuttles have spring retaining catches 29, Fig. 7, at the bottom, and the weight of the projectile acting on these catches causes upper catches 295 to project and retain the projectile in the receptacle. When the hoist is used for lowering ammunition, a lever 25 is operated to declutch the wheel 21, the scuttle being then rotated in the reverse direction by the wheel 26. The catches 29, 295 on the troughs at the top of the hoist are then arranged as shown in Fig. 8 so as to be disconnected by engagement with a member x connected with the clutch lever 25.
