Abstract

A ball bearing comprises an inner race (2) and an outer race (1) encasing balls (3), the wall of the inner race having an aperture (5) through which the balls have been inserted into the bearing, the aperture (5) being located out of any load zone. The bearing may have a one-piece cage (4), or be a full-complement bearing.

Description

HALL BEARING This invention relates to ball bearings having inner and outer races.
According to one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a race for a ball bearing, the race comprising a wall with an aperture in the wall for admitting balls to be inserted into the bearing. Preferably, the race is an inner race for the ball bearing.
According to another aspect of the invention, there is provided a ball bearing comprising an inner race and an outer race encasing balls, the wall of the inner race having an aperture through which the balls have been inserted into the bearing.
For a better understanding of the invention and to show how the same may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawing, in which: - Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating a ball bearing, Figure 2 is a cross-section taken along line Il-Il of Figure 1, Figure 3 is a cross-section taken along the line Ill-Ill of Figure 1, and Figure 4 is a cut-away perspective view of the ball bearing.
The bearing illustrated comprises a circular outer race 1, a circular inner race 2 concentric with the outer race 1 and a plurality of balls 3 captured in a cage 4.
Each race 1, 2 has respective deep grooves lA, 2A, respectively, in which the balls 3 can run. The inner face 2B of the wall of the inner race 2 is arranged to be mounted on a shaft (not shown).
To insert the balls 3 into the bearing, an aperture S is provided through the wall of the inner race 2. This ball filling aperture is arranged to be located so that when the inner race 2 is mounted on the shaft, it is located at a position out of any load zone. The bearing is designed for use when the load is entirely or predominantly radial and fixed in direction, or the direction of application only moves through a limited arc, such that there is a portion of the track of the race 2 where the balls will not make contact during operation. In other words, the aperture S is located in this portion of the track of the inner race 2.
The grooves lA, 2A are deep and the cage 4 is provided with two side rails. With the present construction of bearing, a one-piece cage can be used instead of the more usual two-piece type. A one-piece cage is stronger than a two-piece cage and can be manufactured and assembled at a lower cost than a two-piece cage.
The number of balls 3 that can be fitted in the bearing is not limited by the assembly technique conventionally used for deep groove ball bearings and could in fact be a full complement, i.e. without a cage 4 at all.
The sum of the inner and outer race track depths, i.e. the depths of the grooves lA, 2A, can exceed 50% of the ball diameter without the need for a filling slot, which would otherwise be required to fit the balls 3 into the bearing.
