Abstract

1491781 Bearings SKF INDUSTRIAL TRADING & DEVELOPMENT CO BV 14 Feb 1975 [16 Feb 1974] 6454/75 Heading F2A A method of manufacturing a rolling bearing in which at least one race ring 1 is provided with an integral side flange 3 comprises the steps of (a) forming a groove 10 in the external face of the flange such that the groove corresponds to the outline of a filling-slot to be formed in the flange, (b) heat treating and finish machining the said race ring, (c) removing the part of the flange defined by said groove to form the slot and provide a closure element, (d) assembling the race rings, (e) inserting the rolling members 6 through the slot, (f) replacing in the slot the closure element, and (g) securing the closure element in place. The closure element may be secured by a pin, rivet or screw inserted in a radial bore, or by bonding, or by electron beam welding. Alternatively, the flange and closure element can be formed with an annular groove in which a circlip or sealing disc can be introduced. The groove 10 is formed by turning, milling or stamping. The part defined by the groove is removed by axial pressure. In a further embodiment, both race rings have integral side flanges, and the filling-slot is defined partly by the inner flange and partly by the outer flange at one end. Consequently, two closure elements are formed. The bearing may be a ball bearing, a taper roller bearing, a self-aligning roller bearing, or an axial rolling bearing.
