Abstract
The shutter is concealed in the brickwork cavity of the wall beneath the window sill, and closes in an upward motion. The shutter consists of rigid interlocking slats which are driven upwards by gearing 4 within the shutter housing in the wall cavity. The shutter is operated via an external plug-in portable motor drive containing rechargable batteries, which enables a single motor drive to operate numerous shutters, thus eliminating individual wiring of internal motors in each. The shutter elevates and in guide runners fitted both sides of the window aperture, and retracts from view in a single loop in the housing located in the wall cavity.
Description
This invention relates to a window security shutter with an upwards closing motion.
Window shutters are well known in a downward closing form, with the operating mechanism fitted at the top, generally either side or below a support beam spanning the window opening.
These shutters are obtrusive when fitted as they need space to roll up
The present invention makes use of the wall cavity space in a modern building, below the window sill . The shutter, consisting of interlocking slats with toothed racks mounted at either end of each slat, is driven upwards in guide runners by gears at either side of the shutter housing box.
These gears are mounted on a horizontal drive shaft which in turn is driven by worm and wheel or bevelled gearing. The shutter curtain, when in the open position, is suspended in a loop beneath the gearing, requiring minimal storage space width . The whole system is powered by means of a removable motor drive with rechargable batteries, which plugs in to the door housing and engages with the gear drive shaft. This means several shutters can be powered using the same motor. A typical drive motor will incorporate an adjustable slipping clutch, so that the shutter stops at the end of its travel.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 shows a cross section of a shutter, mounted in a typical building application.
Figure 2 shows a typical toothed rack and slat arrangement
Figure 3 shows an arrangement of the drive gearing
Referring to Figure 1, the shutter comprises a housing 1, which can be tailored in length, width
and height to suit the window width, cavity width and window height respectively. To close, the
shutter curtain 2 passes up a guide section 3, and is drawn up by the drive gears 4 at either side. The drive gears 4 engage in the toothed racks 5, fitted to either end of the slats, an example of which is given in figure 2. The racks 5 stack on one another in the guide above the gearing and the shutter is driven up the runners until it meets an obstacle such as the lintel above the window 6, or the supply of curtain in the box is exhausted. The clutch in the motor operator 7
shown in figure 3 will slip momentarily until the person operating the door stops the motor. The
upward closing shutter may be received in to a channel 8, to add to the strength of the shutter
when closed. The shutter is kept in the upward closed position by friction in the gear drivetrain.
Additional locks (not shown) can be added if necessary.
To open, the motor operator direction is reversed, and the shutter retracts from sight back into the housing box. The guide runners 3 can be fitted to the brickwork prior to being plastered, so the body of the runner is also out of sight.
Claims (1)
- Claim 1 An upward closing security window shutter, fitting in the wall cavity space beneath the window sill. The shutter, consisting of interiocking slats with toothed racks mounted at either end of each slat, is driven upwards in guide runners by gears at either side of the shutter housing box. These gears are mounted on a horizontal drive shaft which in turn is driven by worm and wheel or bevelled gearing. The shutter curtain, when in the open position, is suspended in a loop beneath the gearing, requiring minimal storage space width. The whole system is powered by means of a removable motor drive with rechargable batteries, which plugs in to the door housing and engages with the gear drive shaft. This means that several shutters can be powered using the same motor. A typical drive motor will incorporate an adjustable slipping clutch, so that the shutter stops at the end of its travel.Claim 2 A shutter as described in claim 1, where the shutter housing box is wider at the top, to allow bigger gears if required.Claim 3 A shutter as described in Claims 1 and 2, which can be operated manually by a crank handle if so desired.Claim 4 A shutter as described in any preceding claim, which incorprates a manual disengaging mechanism within the drive train, to allow the shutter to be opened quickly in an emergency,e.g.. fire escape.Claim 5 A shutter as described in any preceding claim where the guide runners above the shutter housing are removable for ease of installation.Claim 6 An upward closing shutter as described herein with reference to figures 1 to 3 attached.
