Abstract
The walls of catalytic apparatus are coated with a mixture of sodium silicate, sodium formate, and a catalyst consisting of heavy or rare metals or their oxides. Cerium oxide, thorium oxide, iron oxide, reduced copper, reduced iron, reduced nickel, and all other heavy or rare metals whose melting-point lies above 550 DEG C. are particularly suitable as catalytic materials. The catalyst is well stirred with a mixture of concentrated solutions of sodium formate and sodium silicate, the two latter being preferably in equal proportions, and the resulting paste then applied in one or more coats to the interior walls of the catalytic apparatus and allowed to harden. Under the action of heat, the sodium formate is decomposed and the liberated hydrogen renders the coating porous. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also the addition of sodium formate only to known catalytic materials such as those specifically mentioned above. The mixture is employed in the form of a paste prepared by stirring the catalytic materials in powdered form into a concentrated solution of the sodium formate. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
