Abstract

326,580. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Dec. 24, 1928. Catalytic agents, preparation of.-Non-metallic catalysts used in the destructive hydrogenation of carbonaceous materials, such as oxides or hydroxides of metals of the sixth group of the periodic system, for example chromium oxide, molybdic acid or tungstic acid or sulphides, carbides or solid metalloids and possessing little mechanical stability, for example those of a pulverulent or mealy nature, are converted into a stable, coherent form by incorporating therewith a small quantity of finely divided metals of the second or third groups of the periodic system such as zinc, aluminium; beryllium, cadmium or the earth metals of the said groups or alloys or carbides thereof, either alone or mixed. Other substances, such as metal salts, alkali metal salts or hydroxides or substance having an acid reaction in aqueous solution, for example soluble magnesium compounds sch as magnesium chloride, may be added. The hardening agent is mixed with an aqueous paste of the constituents of the catalyst and subjected to an intensive mechanical intermixing treatment such as kneading, during which the temperature is kept below 50‹ C, and then gradually dried. The added substances may be removed after stabilization of the catalyst by washing or heating to a high temperature. In an example the production of a stable and hard catalyst for the destructive hydrogenation of hydrocarbons by kneading an aqueous part of molybdic acid and zinc oxide with 1 to 3 per cent of aluminium powder or powdered aluminium bronze is described.
