Abstract

230,973. Lanston Monotype Corporation, Ltd., (Lanston Monotype Machine Co.). Feb. 22, 1924. Milling-machines. - In a copying- machine particularly for cutting punches or matrices such as those used in typecasting, the tracer arm is mounted on a gimbal support having two separate members connected by two independently adjustable lever mechanisms to separate horizontal slides moving in mutually perpendicular directions and coupled so as to impart compound movement to the work support. The machine is of the general type described in Specification 7206/06 and comprises a base 1 having standards 2 connected by a. bridgepiece. 3 in which the vertical tool spindle is mounted. Further upright frame members 4 carry a ring member 5 provided with pivots 6 supporting the outer ring 7 of the gimbal system. The ring 7 has pivots S located at right-angles to the pivots 6 and supporting an intermediate ring 9 which is itself provided with pivots 14 which are in alignment with the pivots 6 and carry the inner gimbal member 15. The intermediate ring 9 is connected by extensions 10 to rods 11 terminating in the ball joint 13, and the gimbal members 7 and 15 are respectively connected to plates 22, 23 mounted upon a fixed plate 16, the plate 23 being bolted to a bottom plate 24 carrying the work-holder 56. The plate 22 is adapted to move only in the direction of the length of the character to be formed, and is provided with flanges 21 running on roller bearings 19, 20 on the fixed plate. The upper plate 23 partakes of the movement of the plate 22 and has in addition a movement in the direction of the width of the pattern, the keys 28 moving in slots 29 to permit this movement. The fixed plate is provided with four adjustable bearing blocks 31 carrying ball bearings 36 which float within the limits of raised rims 37 and which co-operate with bearing blocks 38 in the upper plate. The tracer may be connected at 13 to operate on the pattern either directly or through followers but in order to avoid the distortion produced by this arrangement and to enable larger reduction ratios to be obtained the ball joint 13 is preferably connected as shown to flat pantograph comprising a system of levers wherein the tracer 103 moves over a table 110 provided with patternlocking and centring devices and a ring magazine 111 of followers. The pantograph may be pivoted either at 99 (as shown) to give a two to cne reduction or at a point, 109 to give a four to one reduction, the points 99, 109, 13, and 103 being collinear. The arms 98, 101 of the pantograph are guided by a bracket 112. The movements of the point 13 are transmitted to the gimbal system by the rods 11. The inner gimba.l ring 15 is provided with a boss 51<1> enclosing a rod 46<1> on which is mounted a bell 47<1> carrying a pointer moving over a scale 52<1>. The lower end of the rod 46<1> is connected by a ball joint to a block adjustable in a tubular member 40<1> secured to the upper plate 23, this adjustment being effected by means of a screwed ring 51' engaging the bell 47<1>. Movement of the point 13 in the plane of the paper, Fig. 5 (corresponding to the width dimension of the pattern) tilts the inner gimbal member 15, this movement being transmitted to the upper plate 23 through the proportioning rod 46<1>. The outer gimbal member 7, which is tilted by movement of the tracer in the direction of the length of the pattern, is connected through a similar proportioning device, comprising a rod 46 and block 45, with the plate 22. The work blank is secured in a. holder 56 which is mounted in a guide 58 on the lower plate and is provided with a handle. 57. A notch in the holder is normallv engaged by a latch-controlled pin which may be withdrawn when it is required to remove the holder. The tool 65 is carried in a quill which may be inserted from below into a sleeve secured to the cross-piece 3, the quill comprising a stationary sleeve 66 having bearings for a rotatable sleeve 67 carrying the tool-holder 68. Two pulleys respectively driven by belts 75, 75<1> from an electric motor or other driving mechanism are mounted on ball-bearing hubs secured to the cross-member 3 and provide alternative speeds for the tool-spindle, the quill being provided either with a carrier 77 adapted to engage a groove in the upper pulley or with a similar carrier engaging the lower pulley according to the speed required. To determine the depth of cut the quill is accurately positioned against a stop 95" on a lever 95 adjusted from a micrometer 93. The upward movement of the quill against this stop is effected from a handle 78 on a shaft 79 which actuates through cam and lever mechanism a rod 86 bearing against a pivoted lever 87 provided with a spring pin 89 engaging a groove 90 in the quill. A second cam on the shaft 79 actuates a rod 86<1> connected to a lever 87<1> which operates a slidable member 91 to lock the quill in its adjusted position. The movement of the handle 78 is also arranged to operate an electric contact to start the motor driving the belts 75, 75<1>.
