Abstract

230,476. Swift, G. W. March 6, 1924, [Convention date]. Clutches, claw; gearing for stopping and starting machinery; securing clutch members on shafts.-In order to ensure accurate stopping of a machine at the end of the operation, the clutch comprises a loose member arranged intermediate the driving and driven members and adapted to be acted on by a positive stop, this intermediate member having positive clutch means to engage the driving-member, and fixed lugs which have play between segmental heads on the driven member and carry segmental friction members constantly engaging the periphery of the segmental heads. As applied to a machine for severing lengths from a web, of the kind described in Specification 167,612, a pinion 19, Fig. 1, drives the clutch-controlling pin-wheel 22 by a gear-wheel 21 and the clutch member 15 by gearing 10, 16 - - 18. A loose intermediate member 35 carries a spring-pressed dog 65 to engage the toothed driving-member 15 and is formed with a pair of lugs 37 adapted to engage shoulders 30 on a segmental driven member 27 secured to the roller shaft 2. Bands 40, each secured rigidly at one end and by an adjustable compression spring 44 at the other end to the lugs 37, have attached to them lined friction shoes 48 provided with screws 50 to adjust their grip on the segmental parts 25, 26 of the member 27. A wedge-ended arm 75, actuated by the wheel 22 as described in Specification 167,612, co-operates with a notch 65<a> to withdraw the dog 65 at the end of a revolution, a positive stop arm 81 being simultaneously moved by a link 79 into the path of a laminated projection 86 on the part 35. The shoes 48 are so adjusted that a small amount of slip occurs on engagement of the positive stop, the corresponding slip on re-engagement of the clutch serving to cushion the impact of the parts 37, 30. The stop arm 81 has an operative face consisting of laminated spring plates 82, a spring-pulled latch 90 catching over the projection 86 to prevent rebound.
