Abstract

A reinforcement section for incorporation into a hollow interior of an extruded plastics window frame member is formed from a steel strip having parallel side edges. These are rolled into a box-section and the side edges are interlocked to prevent side-edge spring and to give the reinforcement, and the associated frame member, greater torsional rigidity.

Description

REINFORCEMENT SECTIONS The invention relates to reinforcement sections for plastics windows.
A window may have both the fixed and movable frames formed from frame members of a plastics material. The members can be extruded and in this case the members will have a hollow interior, often of rectangular cross-section. Such members are not particularly resistant either to longitudinal bending or to torsional stress and so it has been customary to introduce a box-section steel reinforcement into the interior of such a member to increase the strength of the member.
A typical reinforcement is of box-section rolled from a steel strip with parallel side edges that are folded during the rolling process until the edges butt one another. It is a problem with such a conventional reinforcement section that, although the edges of the strip are supposed to butt together when the adjacent surfaces are co-planar, this does not always happen. Sometimes, one edge springs above the other edge. In addition, the reinforcement section, when formed, is not particularly torsionally rigid and this means that the associated member incorporating the reinforcement section is also not particularly torsionally rigid.
According to a first aspect of the invention, there is provided a window frame reinforcement of box-section formed from an elongate metal strip having parallel side edges, the side edges, in the box-section, interlocking with one another.
In this way, the ends are locked together so eliminating end spring problems and making the box torsionally more rigid.
According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided a method of making a window reinforcement of boxsection from an elongate metal strip comprising rolling said metal strip into said box-section and interlocking said side edges during said forming process.
The following is a more detailed description of an embodiment of the invention, by way of example, reference being made to the accompanying drawing which is a cross-section of a window reinforcement section.
The reinforcement section is formed from a strip of metal such as steel. The strip is initially flat and has parallel side edges 10.
A rolling process forms the strip into a generally boxsection having opposed longer side walls 11 and opposed shorter side walls 12. The side edges 10 interlock with each other at one shorter side wall 12.
To form this interlock, the portions of the strip adjacent the two side edges 10 overlap one another at the shorter side wall 12. One portion forms the outer surface of the wall and continues beyond the end of the wall 12 to overlap the adjacent longer wall 11 which is inwardly indented to accommodate the edge 10. The other portion is folded back on itself for a distance almost equal to the length of the wall and is embraced by the other portion, so that inwardly at the outer surface of the wall there are three layers of the strip.
This provides a firm interlock between the edges of the strip.
This means that there is no tendency for the edges of the strip to move relative to one another and it also allows torsional and other stresses to be transmitted across the join between the edges. This makes the box-section torsionally more rigid than it would be in the absence of the interlock.
It will be appreciated that the drawing shows only one example of an interlock. There are many other interlocks that could be used. The interlock need not be at a shorter side edge; it could be intermediate a longer edge or at any other suitable position. Further, the shape of the section need not be as shown; the section could be any required shape.
In use, the reinforcement section is inserted into a hollow interior of an extruded plastics window frame member. The section is sized to be a tight fit in the interior and provides the member with increased strength, particularly in torsion. In addition, there is no tendency for the edges 10 of the strip to spring apart.
