Description

"An Improved Water Trap" This invention relates to a water trap for mounting on a waste water outlet where the available height within which the outlet can be installed is limited and more particularly, but not exclusively, to a water trap for mounting on a shower tray or the like.
Conventional water traps which rely upon a water seal in a substantially S-shaped passage are required under British Standards for small bore traps to provide a depth of seal of 38 millimetres and this requirement results in such conventional water traps being of a relative large height so that they need to have a relatively large space available beneath the appliance to which they are to be fitted.
Where the appliance is, for example, a shower tray and particularly, where the shower tray is mounted at floor level on the second storey of a building, it is found that there is a very limited space available between the ceiling of the first floor and the surface of the second floor on which the tray is mounted which is often insufficient to accommodate such a conventional water trap.
The object of this invention is to provide a water trap which whilst providing the necessary depth of water seal occupies less depth of space beneath the appliance to which it is to be fitted than the above described conventional water trap.
According to the invention, a water trap for connecting to a waste water outlet of a shower tray or the like comprises a body having a first chamber into which an inlet tube extends downwardly from said waste water outlet, an outlet port from the first chamber communicating with a second chamber, said outlet port being disposed at or adjacent to the upper end of the body, and an outlet in the second chamber to which an outlet pipe is connectible, wherein the outlet is disposed at a lower level than the outlet port.
The overall depth of water seal provided is controlled by the depth between the lower edge of the outlet port and the lower edge of the inlet tube and it will be appreciated that the location of the outlet port at or adjacent to the upper end of the body enables the necessary depth of water seal to be provided in a water trap of overall minimum depth.
Preferably, the outlet port is non-circular in shape.
Preferably, also, the width of the outlet port is greater than the height thereof.
The width of the outlet port is, preferably, equal to or greater than twice the height of the outlet port and may extend for substantially half of the periphery of the first chamber of the body.
Preferably, the body has a flat top enabling the.body to be a flush fit against the base of the shower tray to which it is attached.
Preferably, also, sealing means is provided on the top of the body to effect a water tight seal between the top of the body and the base of the shower tray.
The inlet tube is, preferably, provided with an internal screw thread which is connectible to an external screw thread on a waste water outlet pipe of the shower tray to connect the water trap thereto.
Preferably, a removeable grill is provided in the waste water outlet pipe to allow access to the body of the water trap to facilitate cleaning or the removal of obstructions therefrom.
Preferably, also, the grill is removably connected to the waste water outlet pipe by a screw-threaded or a bayonet type connection.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings of which: Figure 1 is a partly sectioned side elevation of a water trap mounted on a shower tray, and Figure 2 is a plan view of the water trap.
Referring now to the drawings, a water trap formed of, for example, a plastics material for mounting on a waste water outlet of a shower tray 10 comprises a body indicated generally at 12 formed of an upper portion 14 which is connected at 16 to a lower portion 18. An inlet tube 20 is formed in the upper portion 14 and extends downwardly into a first chamber 22 of the body 12. The inlet tube 20 has an internal screw-threaded portion 24 which is a screw fit on an externally screw-threaded waste water outlet pipe fitting 26 mounted in the shower tray 10 by means of which the water trap is connected flush to the lower surface of the shower tray 10. A sealing ring 28 of rubber, neoprene or the like, is disposed between the flat top of the upper portion 14 of the body 12 and the lower surface of the shower tray 10 to provide a water tight seal therebetween.
A removable grill 30 providing access for cleaning and the removal of obstructions from the water trap is connected to the fitting 26 by a bayonet type connection 32. Alternatively, the grill 30 can be removeably connected to the fitting 26 by a screw-threaded connection (not shown), particularly where the grill 30 is formed of metal such as brass or the like.
A non-circular outlet port 34 is formed in the upper portion of the wall of the lower portion 18 of the body 12 to provide communication with a second chamber 36 also formed in the lower portion 18 as an integral part thereof. The width of the outlet port 34 is greater than its height and in this preferred embodiment the width extends for substantially half of the periphery of the first chamber 22 of the body 12.
An outlet 38 from the second chamber 36 to which an outlet pipe (not shown) is connectible in conventional manner is disposed at a lower level than the outlet port 34 so that the outlet pipe can be fitted beneath conventional flooring 40 in which the shower tray 10 is mounted.
The depth of the water seal in the trap is controlled by the vertical depth between the lower edge of the outlet port 34 and the lower edge of the inlet tube 20 and the location of the outlet port at the upper portion of the wall of the body 12 of the trap and the non-circular shape of the outlet port, where the width is greater than the height, and the flush fitting of the flat top of the body 12 of the trap against the shower tray 10 enables a trap of minimum height to be provided whilst maintaining the required depth of water seal. In addition the disposition of the outlet 38 at a lower level that the outlet port 34 allows the connection thereto of the outlet pipe (not shown) without the pipe fouling conventional flooring 40 in which the shower tray 10 is mounted.
Furthermore, although this form of water trap is particularly suitable for use in the waste outlets from shower trays, it could also be used in the waste outlets of other appliances such as baths, or the like without departing from the scope of the invention
