Abstract

A component 10 is constrained to slide along an elongate component 2 by engagement with its thickened edge 6, and is selectively secured by a bolt 20 which extends through a hole 14 in the component 10 and engages by its thicker portion 26 in one of the notches 8 in the edge 6. When the bolt 20 is partly withdrawn, the narrower portion 28 permits sideways movement of the bolt in order to clear the notch 8. The components 10, 2 may be parts of a scaffolding system, and comprise aluminium extrusions. The bolt 20 may be held in securing position by gravity or a spring. <IMAGE>

Description

Title. Locking mechanism tor a sliding component.
It is otten necessary to connect two components together in an assembly in such a way as to permit sliding adjustment along the axis ot one component but also to be necessary to lock one member against the other securely once adjustment is complete.
It is common to employ a retractable bolt to engage through holes in one or both components. However, these bolts are difficult to retain in the holes when retracted and often become lost. It is often difficult to maintain the holes in alignment whilst attempting to insert the pin as the pin itself hampers view. Where visibility is impaired due to poor access or lighting conditions, it can be very difficult to pertorm the task. The equipment on which this type ol fixing may be used is of great diversity and includes:- Farm machinery, scaffolding, gymnasium equipment, vehicle trailers, in tact, any mechanism requiring a sliding incremental adjustment.
1he invention comprises of two or more components which are so formed as to have a single degree of freedom of movement with relation to each other. This degree of freedom may be ot linear nature or indeed could be a circular arc or even a combination ot both.
Typically one member may consist of a flat member with a thickened edge or bulb along the length ci which adjustment is required. The second member emboules an aperture similar in shape to the edge plot lie ot tne thirst member and providing a mating protile, which when the two components are assembled together permits a single degree. of adJustable freedom.
The thirst component incorporates semi-circular notches along the edge of the thickened bulb corresponding with the positions of adjustment required. The second component contains a shaped bolt which is retained in a hole which passes through the axis of the notches in the first component. This component is so proportioned that when it is retracted it provides a reduced diameter portion which allows the notched member to pass through the aperture without restriction. When the bolt is pushed into the advance position and the members are axially adjusted the bolt locates into the first notch present and passes through both components thus preventing further adjustment.
The bolt mechanism may be held in the locked position by gravity or by other devices such as a sprlng.
the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings where Fig.l shows an isometric representation ci a typical mechanism.
Fhe mechanism incorporates a first member 2 having a flat body portion 4 terminating in a thickened bulb portion along the perimeter edge. Notches , semi-circular or rectangular in shape are located along the edge of the tirst member corresponding with the desired increment ol adjustment.
second member 1U having a shapes aperture 12 which is a close lit over the edSe profile 0. A circular aperture 14 passes through tne second member such that the axis ot the hole corresponds with the axis of the notches in the first member.
A third member comprising of a multi cylindrical bolt 20 passes through the aperture 14 and is retained within the hole by a thickened head portion 22 at one end and by a retaining nut 24 at the other end, The bolt is proportioned such that the diameter D1 of the circular portion 26 is a close it inside the aperture 14 and the diameter D OI the reduced portion 28 is half that of the bolt diameter D.. The bolt is also proportioned such that the length h is greater than the aepth of the hole h1 . The purpose of these dimensional constraints is such that when the bolt is in the retracted position it is possible for the bolt to be moved sideways permitting the unrestricted passage of the flrst member. The junction between the two diameters of the bolt may be conical in shape to assist in the engagement of the larger portion in the semi-circular notch.

Claims (6)

  1. Claims.
What we claim is Claim 1.
Two components within a mechanism having a single degree of relative freedom whereby a third cross bolt locks the freedom of movement at specific degrees oi adjustment.
  2. Claim 2.
A mechanism as described in claim I which is a component in a scaffolding system.
  3. Claim 3.
A mechanism as in claims 1 or 2 where one or both of the component is manufactured from aluminium extrusions.
  4. Claim 4.
a mechanism as described in claim i whereby the cross bolt is held in the advanced ( locked ) position by a spring mechanism.
  5. Claim 5.
A mechanism as describrd in claim I whereby only one position ci locking is present.
  6. Claim 6.
A mechanism as in claim I whereby the junction between the two diameters of the cross bolt may be conical in shape to assist in the engagement of the larger portion in the semi-circular notch.
