Abstract

A bedsheet (10) is adapted to fit a mattress (11) by providing marginal panels (14, 15, 16 and 17) which, in use, extend peripherally under the mattress (11) so that the sheet envelops all but a portion of a lower surface of the mattress (11). The bedsheet (10) thus dispenses with elastic material used in fitted sheets known hitherto and, in consequence is more durable and is more easily foldable for storage. <IMAGE>

Description

A Bedsheet The invention relates to a bed sheet adapted to envelop corners of a mattress.
Such sheets are generally known as fitted sheets and include an elastic material so that, in use, the material of the sheet is in tension, at least across an upper surface of the mattress, and does not ruck up.
However, a disadvantage of such fitted sheets is that over a period of time and after repeated launderings the elastic material deteriorates and becomes less efficacious. Such sheets are not easily foldable for storage.
According to the present invention there is provided a bedsheet comprising a first panel for extending over a mattress in use, second panels forming a peripheral skirt to the first panel and third panels extending from the skirt, the arrangement being such that in use the third panels extend peripherally under the mattress and the sheet envelops all but a portion of a lower surface of the mattress.
The bedsheet in accordance with the invention thus provides the advantages of fitted sheets known hitherto but without the disadvantages because it does not require elastic material and is easily foldable for storage.
Following is a description, by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, of one method of carrying the invention into effect.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is an elevation of a mattress contained within an embodiment of a bedsheet in accordance with the present invention and shown inverted from a normal in use condition, Figure 2 is a plan view of a sheet of textile material for forming into the bed sheet shown in Figure 1, Figure 3 is a diagrammatic representation showing stitching of the material to provide a corner portion of the bedsheet, and Figure 4 is a diagrammatic representation showing stitching of the material to provide tuck-in margins of the bedsheet.
Referring now to Figure 1 of the drawings there is shown a bedsheet 10 located on an inverted mattress 11, the bedsheet being formed of a sheet of textile material comprising a rectangular panel 12 having a peripheral skirt 13 and marginal panels 14, 15, 16 and 17 extending inwardly of the skirt 13.
The sheet of textile material is shown at 18 in Figure 2 and is of rectangular configuration the four corners being cut out to provide tabs 19, 20, 21 and 22 each extending longitudinally of a corresponding side of the rectangular configuration.
The sheet 18 is formed into the bedsheet 10 by folding the sheet 18 along a fold axis 23 as indicated by the arrow in Figure 2 so that the tab 20 overlays the tab 21 and edges 24 and 25 of the tabs 20, 21 coincide one with the other. The tabs 20, 21 are united one with another by stitching the tabs together along the edges 26, 27 from a location 'A' (see Figure 3) intermediate the fold axis 23 and the edges 24, 25 of the tabs 20, 21 to the fold axis 23 in a direction substantially parallel to the edges 26, 27. The tab 20 is then provided with a cut 28 extending from the location 'A' to a location 'B' at the edge 26 of the tab 20 and the tab 20 is folded along fold axes 29 and 30 as indicated by the arrows in Figure 3 so as to form a corner portion 32 as shown in Figure 4 and thereby define the skirt 13 and the marginal panel 15.A flap 33, defined by the edge 26 and the edge 24 of the tab 20, the cut 28 and the fold axis 30, is then united with tab 21 by stitching in a direction substantially perpendicular to the edge 27 of tab 21 and parallel to the edge 25 of tab 21.
The above procedure is then repeated so as to form four corner portions and the sheet 10 is turned inside out so as to conceal the stitches.
In order to fit the mattress 11 into the bedsheet 10 two corners at one end of the bedsheet 10 receive corresponding corners of the mattress 11 and the bedsheet is manipulated so that the other two corners at a remote end of the bedsheet 10 receive corresponding corners of the mattress 11. In this fitted condition, the marginal panels 14, 15, 16 and 17 extend under the mattress 11 and the bedsheet 10 envelops all but a lower surface of the mattress 11.
It will be appreciated that the bedsheet 10 may be provided with releasable fastenings at corners thereof instead of stitches.
