Abstract

1452120 Mattress covers S M WEISS 20 Dec 1973 59257/73 Headings A4M and A4S [Also in Division Dl and D2] A sheet for a mattress is formed from one piece of two-way stretch knitted 100% cotton fabric having arcuately shaped corner edges 20, 22 which when stitched together serve in use to draw the lower edge extremities 24 of side-panels of the sheet inward under the bottom of the mattress as at 26. The lower edges may be rolled into several layers and stitched to prevent unravelling of the edges. The fabric may be jersey knitted in tubular form and slit and opened, the length of the knit fabric being mechanically compressively pre-shrunk about 20%. The tubular knitted fabric is spread width-wise to a predetermined tension and steamed to maintain the width. Subsequently the fabric is compressively shrunk length-wise in a sequence of steps including acting primarily upon one surface of the fabric, controllably lengthening the fabric and then acting on the opposite surface, with a final application of tension width-wise.
